When I go to a new place I always start out with a 3 to see how hot it is, then usually go up to either 4 or 5 on future visits depending on how they season. Know your tolerance. Western expat in SE Asia here. If it makes you feel any better extremely spicy food is almost exclusively a mark of the low class. A bit of heat is fine and can add to the dish but anyone who intentionally maces themselves and sweats and cries and drips snot at the table is almost certainly a farmer or construction worker. I think this is another level of why Western SE Asian restaurants typically aren’t thrilled with locals there making a scene out of trying to mace themselves. Also, in excess it obviously ruins the dish and is sort of like giving to nice restaurant and then dumping half a bottle of catchup on your food. You might add a splash of fish sauce to a Thai dish but if you absolutely drowned it in fish sauce so the plate was swimming and then choked and sputtered as you forced it down and loudly exclaimed to all your friends how you can take the flavor it would be a bit cringe. Same thing with excessive spice.

Their heat is different as well. I’ve given locals here who claim Asian food is spiciest mid-high level Western hot sauce most any enthusiast could eat no problem and they all went into a full panic guzzling ice water and panting for 30 minutes.

All that said, do what you like, just be aware spicy is one thing but only retards mace themselves while pretending it’s authentic.

Yeah they make weird extra spicy food that's just inedible and would only be eaten as a "challenge".
Mean while lots of normal people just put some spicy chilli into food that suits it and make it taste much better.
Eating the small Asian chilli's in soy sauce is nice or a habanaros in meat sauces it great while loading a chip up with chemical tasting powered and doing spicy food challenge is a one off not a culture.
