There is no one most important tool in the kitchen, and if there was it wouldn't be a knife. Bare minimum needed to cook anything in the most basic sense would be a heat source, so most people would probably consider a range the most important tool. After that I'd say a vessel to cook in is probably second most important because while you theoretically could just cook things over an open burner, I don't want to do that shit personally, so a large versatile skillet of some kind. After that, a knife and cutting board are probably next on the list, followed by a wood or silicon cooking spoon and a pair of tongs.

if it's stainless, it needs to be preheated so it doesn't stick to food, but you can accomplish a lot
even deep frying, if you have a thermometer and don't have kids or pets and have a fire extinguisher nearby and know all the risks (e.g. do not douse with water)
