the phylloxera outbreak in the 1850s killed about 70% of vines in the old-world, until they figured out that the vines could be grafted to american rootstocks that were resistant to the louse

Before this time, cognac/armagnac were the most widely consumed spirit in the world, but the deficit of wine and brandy grapes caused whiskey and neutral grain spirits to become more popular in their place

Though brandy regained some of its popularity, it was never able to regain the title of most consumed spirit again

Im not sure that I agree with you. they were still making (barely) whisky in Scotland and Ireland since late 18th, and barely based aclo beverages were as popular as today, and the phylloxera killed just SOME grape in france (now known as carmenere, luckily cultivated in Chile). so it must be something different.

Rappers like to extol the virtues of Hennessy; their target audience drinks a disproportionate amount of it.

I don't live in a particularly bad area - middle and upper-middle class - but it does includie a small enclave of my city's up-and-coming urban musicians. Because of this, the local liquor store has $50 Hennessy and Grey Goose (specifically these brands of cognac and vodka) in a locked display right next to open displays of $300 scotch and tequila.

I tried Armenian cognac once when I was in the countryside. It was cheap and tasted like strong cough medicine. I got drunk really fast though.

Ive heard that about Hennessy, but again: cognac was an upper class drink for centuries, so what happened? there lots of people in Europe, we dont face atrocities as rapers here. and as a scotch drinker myself I can asure you, you can buy a good old single malt around 50 bucks in the states.

I didnt even know US makes cognacs. try Europeans. and (tss) armagnacs are even better and cheaper.

You can buy good $50-$100 scotch right next to the $300 ones. I just find it funny that the most expensive stuff in this store is out in the open, but the bottles that are being stolen are the stuff of rap songs.

Cognac and Armagnac are named for their regions of origin, anything similar made outside of these areas are just brandies.

sec.. what? armenians do cognac, 99% of their production is owned by French by now, but still they make pretty shitty ones ("wood" infused tech, lots of sugar added, no no). so what was your point, fren?

I like hennessy but I hate that its a staple of nigger culture so I dont drink it often. Also I never tell anyone Im drinking it because the first thing theyll think is "henny" and niggers. Plus it costs too much for what it is, just a whisky with a bit more flavour. Id rather drink a johnny walker red label which is a lot cheaper in comparison. Though Ive only ever had hennessy and martell (?) cognac, which was very nice but expensive.
