I actually really love their burgers, even though it is on the pricier side so I only eat it occasionally. I really like the greasiness and simplicity of the ingredients. The only downside is that whenever I do eat five guys, I have to eat it right there at the restaurant instead of taking it home because the greasiness makes the whole thing soggy if I wait too long to eat it. They were good like 6/7 years ago when they had an above-average fast food burger at an average fast food price.
But now they charge decent restaurant price for a burger that’s only above-average in a fast food context.
For the same price as my local 5donalds, I can go to a local hipster burger joint that bakes it’s own buns, gets it’s produce toppings from our local farmers market, and makes its patties out of beef raised within 50miles of here.

Five Guys is important for us Brits because it's our only option in that category. Prior to 2014 we had either McDonalds/Burger King/ Pub Burger or these horrendous hipster places that banked on making a "posh" burger experience. They were shit and overpriced and had horrendous service.

Five Guys came along and showed us Premium Fast Food and now they're in every city. Yeah they're still expensive, but still about half the price of the hipster chains were, quality is amazing and the service is speedy.

ShakeShack has since came but only in London.
There's a few good indie places like Almost Famous in Manchester or Bread Meats Bread in Glasgow.

Main thing i'm excited about is Wendy's coming back. The burger quality is so much better than the competition at that price point.

Expensive as all heck, but prices everywhere are going up as more fast food places are aiming for a $10 lunch, so I guess that's less an issue nowadays.

If you like greasy, soft fries they have the best fries of any fast food chain in the USA. The burger itself is also one of the best for US chains in both taste, quality, and quantity, but plenty of individual restaurants can do better at that price point or lower.

>>16676289
Agreed.
You can also tell this is really the general reaction from people being so fixated on the price rather than the taste. They are good burgers, and I imagine the frequent fast-food crowd wouldn't have nearly the complaint about them if it was at a price-point that didn't hit their wallet as much.

>>16676679
Culver's has great burgers for their price, but the actual amount and quality of meat, toppings, etc. is at least mildly inferior. As far as taste goes its really just personal preference, and I think Culver's cheesier burgers are great in their own right.
Culver's clearly wins in sides and soft-serve, of course.

Yeah, I meant fast food chains when I said "chains," but dedicated sit-down chains with appetizers/bars/waiters etc. are also chains. My mistake.
Don't live near any sit-down chains anymore besides Denny's, so my opinions are probably dated, but:
Some steakhouse(ish) chains make the best plainish burgers I've tasted from chains overall, and they usually run just a similar price for just the burger. Red Robins has several great/unique burgers, but those usually have toppings or seasoning that overpowers the burger, so that's up to personal preference.

However, the best burgers I've had overall in terms of taste and quality (that aren't homemade) have come from individual restaurants. I've found those middle-high end ones that pander to businessmen and formal events, with wide selection of meat products and some in-house processing, tend to make the best burgers overall.

If the burgers from the individual places are a 85-95+, then Longhorn/Chili's/Red Robins was like a 75-90 depending on the burg and the staff, and Five Guys is pretty much consistently 80.
In comparison, Culvers would be like a 65-75, and McDonalds would be a 45-60 at best, it's my bare minimum quality for grabbing a fast food burger.
