It's your pic. If I want to sip on bourbon all night long, Beam is fantastic, never needed anything fancier, and if I want to make a whiskey and coke, I don't feel as bad as if I used some fancy shit aged in barrels made from Abraham Lincoln's log cabin for a hundred years. By the way, the fancy stuff really doesn't taste that much better, there are serious diminishing returns when it comes to the price of bourbon.

Huge. I didn't realize I was always in a varying state of being hung over all the time. First bit was tough but it got easier. Also physically it will catch up to you. The quality of sleep you get after boozing alone makes a day and night difference.
Physically I don't feel tired and bloated all the time and have a ton more energy. Mentally I'm not depressed and anxious all the time.
Even being a "moderate" alcoholic is awful, because you don't notice how much it's affecting you and everything you do until you've stopped.

Yeah I mean if you're OK with self control and moderation that's cool. You will eventually start getting hangovers though, it just happens. I used to be one of those "just drink water and eat a banana before going to bed and you'll be fine" idiots and then at a certain point it just stopped working lol.
I'll still have a beer or something if I'm out with a friend, social drinking was never the problem. I just don't keep booze at the house. Also you think about how many empty calories there are in every beer or whisky and it adds up.
Took me a while to adjust to enjoying my old hobbies sober and I dropped a couple friends that I only really hung out with or played video games to drink, but it is what it is.

Having a go to is a mistake.
How many whiskies have you tried? I bet it's fuck all, and your go-to is the wrong choice for you. You should be trying a new whisky every time.
If you hadn't tried fuck all, then you'd realize the difference in quality at each price point is marginal compared to price fluctuations, so you'd buy based upon sales.

That said, I find Starward Two Fold and Glen Moray 15 are frequently on sale, and are underpriced anyway. It helps that the latter is on sale atm.

I think Tito's is great, if a little pricy here.
But if you're chasing price to performance then I'd recommend you purchase a charcoal based water filter jug and run bottom shelf vodka through it. Green Mark followed by Stolichnaya improve the most with this method and I think they do compete with midshelf vodka like Tito's (even if you don't subscribe to the belief that vodka should taste as close to water as possible).

Is the liquor snob scene just a huge tupperware party for guys coming of age? Every whisky or rum group you join on social media is mostly made up of brand ambassadors or other industry people trying to peddle their newest craft spirit/independent bottling of X to retards who buy alcohol not for casual enjoyment but in order to "complete the connection" or because they have "fear of missing out". Whiskytubers are mostly literal paid shills or are working their way up to becoming one. And as a cherry on top, reddit identity politics started seeping into the liquor scene which lead to Jim Murray getting "cancelled" because he used sexual language to describe whisky in the past.
It's just liquor. It's just alcohol distilled from surplus carbohydrates that cost fuck all to make but then some faggot put their name on it and now soyjaks are creaming themselves over it.

Tends to be smokier. It depends on the agave as well. Though that's subtler.
I'd say the main flavor is a smokiness that comes from how they prepare the agave, then a unsweetened fruitiness I guess. It's not sweet most of the time (though you can get sweet ones) but it does have fruit to it.
But, I don't know. The one I pictured there is easy to get and costs about 40 bucks if you want to try it. It's a good standard one. Don't get the Crema one also from that company, it's very sweet and not indicative of the spirit in general.

No / Not yet / Depends on what you're calling the scene.

>whisky group on social media made up of brand ambassadors
Quite frankly calling yourself a whisky group without there being tastings is a joke and you shouldn't be considering it part of the scene.
And a brand ambassador is someone you should be talking to after you've decided you like their product. You will try discover what went into making that product so that you can make predictions on other products based on how they are produced.
The best ambassador I came across was at a free 13 tequila tasting, which pitted her 3 products against 10 others. One of hers turned out better than the rest (except the $200 other brand bottle), and I learned that I like unaged tequila which is not what I would have expected.
And the worst was at a paid 100 shiraz tasting (with 20 different reps) where they try to convince you to buy in while you try, which really just slowed down your tasting meaning you were unlikely to get through them all. Of course if you find a nice wine it's nice to have someone to talk to while you're drinking (as opposed to tasting).

>Whiskytubers are mostly literal paid shills
Depends on the tubers. Whisky tribe for example is selling a marketing course, so they never say anything bad. Whisky.com are unaffiliated whisky retailers so they will give fairly honest reviews since you're going to buy from them regardless of what you pick, but they give scores because that could hurt business. Then there are truly independent tubers like Aquavitae that are entirely Patreon funded, so they're unbiased (different palette than mine though).
In any case the situation is infinitely better than the wine review scene, where an award is a negative indicator of quality.

>Jim Murray getting "cancelled"
Honestly I'd like it if he did. Anything he rates highly skyrockets in price, and he rates fucking everything.
That said, it's clearly the industries fault for failure to keep up with demand, and reveals an opening in the market for other trusted reviewers.

The real scene is in the whisky bars where you can rapidly try new stuff, and the liquor stores where you can freely try new stuff.
The young guys are sharing half pours of 40 different whiskies in a night.
The old guys are asking for what's new this week.
There is a real audience out there of people attempting to try it all and discover what's best.

100% cork failure on Bulleit.
Also the standard release is 40% here for some reason. I'm not sure it that's to it's advantage since it's a really cheap mixer that isn't offensive like Johnny Red, Jameson, etc.

>How does mezcal taste?
Amazing.

Tequila is just a specific type of mezcal made from blue agave. Mezcal is an agave based spirit but made from one of many agave plants and made in one of nine Mexican states (of 29). There is usually about a dozen or so that are commonplace.

The nice thing about it is that the process is far less industrialized then tequila is these days. The pricier ones typically being artisanal if not ancestral (narrow and narrower methods of production, ancestral basically using only age-old methods, all manual, only clay and wood tools, ovens, etc.).

They all taste different, like >>16656857 said they vary quite a lot. For a first timer one I would recommend is Ilegal Joven; it is inexpensive, fruity, a little smoky, smooth, and as OP asks one of my go-to bottles, definitely my go-to mezcal.

>>16653664
As far as bourbon tho, which is my favorite spirit, my go-to is Wild Turkey Rare Breed.
