Why do you drink? I've never had booze and I don't plan on ever drinking it. Everyone tells me it doesn't even taste good, and I don't really get the appeal of drunkenness. As far as I could ever tell, it just makes you do things you'd regret later,/wouldn't want to do if you were just yourself, gives you a hangover, etc etc. So what's the appeal?

I like the way it tastes. It's fun to get drunk with friends. It's less fun to get drunk alone, but it can make you feel better sometimes.

This isn't really true. Normies like to use alcohol as an excuse to do shit that they really want to do.

>gives you a hangover
Just drink plenty of water.

People drink alcohol because it makes them feel happy. There really isn't any downside if you don't abuse it.

The actual flavor of beers is just as varied as wines, you could hate one variety and adore another, saying it tastes like ass without every trying it is just ignorant.
Also that spot between a hard buzz and flat out fucked up is a supremely sublime feeling, feels very light and euphoric.

I like the taste but not the effects. The rest of the shit you said is just people justifying their own bad decisions.
I've never had a hangover in my life and I'm the last to leave. People don't drink enough water or look after their health properly.

Alcohol is the closest thing I have to eradicating my anxiety. It's always turned me into the person I wanted to be, instead of a total wallflower that takes hours to warm up to the situation at hand. Everything is more fun.

Lots of it actually tastes pretty damn good, as long as you're not in that weird state of life where you've equated good taste with corn syrup and sugar, and nothing else can even work.

Abusing alcohol to the point of getting drunk and creating regret is very much an American thing, which I say as an American. We shelter our kids from booze, and let them get out of hand the moment they have a chance to acquire any, whereas Europe especially is more open to letting them taste it, savor the moment, and grow a bit.

Many, many people have a very pleasant night with a few drinks, loosen up a bit, and have no hangover. You'll never know until you try it. Do whatever you want though.

I enjoy the taste and the way it pairs with food primarily. It doesn't "make" you do anything thats just a cope for bad people and I've never had a hangover no matter how drunk I've gotten. 1. it can taste good
2. it is highly addictive - some people are genetically predisposed to it, so even after being drunk only a few times, they always want it thereafter
3. hangovers are only really bad if you rarely get drunk - the more often you do it, the better the hangovers get
4. being drunk feels really really good
5. you do things you regret because you take more risks - there are upsides and downsides to that

what's hard to understand is why people don't get this. it is clear just by observing people who are drinking that they are louder, they are laughing. what the fuck do you think is going on with them?

Tastes good, feels good. The consequences of drunkenness you're talking about only apply if you get really drunk. I love drinking but I hate getting wasted. when you get the right level of ethanol in your bloodstream it's amazing, literally one of the best drug feelings out there (at least for me).

Music is enhanced, socializing is better, laughter comes easier, women become sexier, dancing becomes fun, you become more creative in terms of writing, etc, just wandering round the city, doing normal activities, watching movies etc are a lot better. I could go on.

Some of the best memories of my life have been while intoxicated, and I mean this not in a pathetic way, but in a really positive way. In the sense of, this drink is amazing! get the word out! if you're shy, have social anxiety, struggle with women, confidence, or hell even if you're in physical pain, alcohol is a godsend. it's like it brings out the 'real' you, hidden behind all the neurosis and caginess.

but obviously there are incredible downsides and some of the worst moments have also been while drunk, and I'm a teetotaler now after being alcoholic for years.

A lot of people enjoy being buzzed. I dont think many people enjoy being drunk, but they are probably just the ones who dont know how to stop. The buzz feels good, so they are dumb and want to heighten the feeling but end up blacking out and doing stupid things. So it's basically just young or stupid people. I wouldn't say alcoholics because most alcoholics dont get drunk. They more maintain the feeling of where they want to be 24/7. Typically a strong buzz to avoid withdrawal symptoms.

It makes everything more fun. I started drinking my parents alcohol every night in highschool when I was depressed and didn’t know what depression was. I would chill in my room and jam out to music on my headphones, delaying bedtime and squeezing all the fun in that I could, because I dreaded getting up in the morning.
That’s bad, of course, but light drinking in the evening is a great way to unwind and occasional partying is good fun. You end up making a fool of yourself when you party, but it’s ok because everyone else is and they only remember bits and pieces anyway. Drink water and you don’t get too hungover.
And fyi, you run into a lot of people with that same opinion on drinking and they are fucking insufferable, especially when they go to drinking parties.

How do I learn to pace myself? I went to drink with some coworkers I don't know too well and at first I could feel my hands shaking from social anxiety as I picked up my first glass, then after a few drinks I become more comfortable and started having fun, then eventually I got blackout and later learned I got belligerent, started cursing a lot... I know the trappist brews are kind of a meme lately but they are genuinely fantastic beers, Orval is my choice for a true trappist ale, fruity, citrusy start and ending with a refreshing hoppy taste without being overkill like typical American craft IPAs, Chimay Blue as a close second, though personally my hand down favorite is Saint Bernardus Abt 12 which is a "abbey style" beer, not a real trappist ale, but absolutely fantastic. Belgian beers are generally very malty, fruity, with little to no bitterness, sometimes like with Abt 12 somewhat sweet. Looking at them like coffee, you taste more of the roast than anything.
With Bernardus you taste the yeast and malts giving it a "bready" taste with a sweetness to finish it off, fantastic beer.

The trick with beers is looking at the taste in waves, instead of downing a gulp and focusing on the bitterness of the end, note the initial taste, smell, the taste of the head which typically tastes very different from the actual liquid, how the flavor changes on the tongue, and how it ends. It sounds really faggy but it's how I fell in love with beer. One of the keys to identifying the flavors of beer is becoming familiar with the difference between the flavors of hops and malt, where Abt 12 is a malty beer, Orval has a hoppy finish. I do recommend Belgian beers because of a "fuller" more robust taste but for domestic beers Yuengling is a great budget macro and PBR has a corny-sweet taste to it, both are pretty good as cheap lagers, with Yuengling being the standout against almost all macro lagers. Steer clear as you could from any "Light" variants unless you want to down skunk water for an easy, cheap drunk.
