Just imagine I'm talking about Vegemite. What makes Marmite so good is the combination with a dairy counterpart. Butter and Marmite on toast, or Marmite and Cheese in scones or on toast. By itself it's alright. My mum used to give it to me and my sister when we had ulcers on our tongues. I don't know if it did anything but it felt good and it shit us up at least.

There's not just a difference between vegemite and marmite, but in fact there's a difference between a number of products which use the same names and labels, such as:

Typically if you're buying it from a big retailer, yeah. Some smaller importers manage to bring in the authentic stuff, and once you've had both you'll definitely know the difference.
IIRC, the restriction had to do with the amount of vitamin supplements in it and its inherent lack of nutrition making it qualify as a "health product" instead of a "food product" in some jurisdictions, requiring it to be labelling differently and subjecting it to extra taxes and standards. So they just made a version without the added stuff to sell abroad. Same deal with Bovril, too.
