You've definitely seen it before if you've ever entered a thread where people were discussing rye. It's pretty much the gold standard of affordable American rye whiskey. Good amount of spice, not overly sweet, flavor is good neat but it can stand up to ice or water if that's your jam. Find a bottle and try it, if you like rye at all you won't regret it.

Scotch should be reserved for a contemplative drink at night, rainy days, or when spending time with an old friend. If you're smoking a cigar, scotch will pair better than other whiskeys.
Irish and Tennessee whiskeys are best as shots or for mixing in cola and are reserved for beginner drinkers, uneducated palates, and drunks.

Excellent. I picked up a bottle a few years ago out of curiosity (I drank bourbon exclusively and wanted to try something different) and because I had heard good things. At first, I didn't care for it and found the smokiness off-putting and it had an almost antiseptic taste to it. It cost me about $50 though so I wasn't going to dump it and would pour a small glass from time to time. About a third of the way through the bottle, I started to pick up on some of the more subtle flavors and it really grew on me. There's a refreshing spring water quality to it and the peaty smoke adds an earthiness that's warming. It's like putting on an old wool sweater. If you're new to Islay Scotch, I'd say not to let your initial thoughts put you off. It takes some time to appreciate it but you'll soon become old friends.

Most Scotch is made from a mash of malted barley, though other grains are sometimes used. Blended Scotch is two or more single malts from different distilleries mixed together to achieve a desired taste (these can be tasty, but are usually not as high quality and are usually cheaper). Single grain means that it was made at one distillery, but can contain other grains, in addition to malted barley. Depending on where in Scotland it's made and the methods used (e.g. smoking the malt with peat, aging in old sherry barrels, etc.), Scotch may be fruity and sweet (especially Highland Scotch), smokey and earthy (common in Islay Scotch) or anything in between.
This is just the very basics, though, and there's far more to it, but this should give you a feel for it.
