Hopefully not this time, though.

There are some great washington wines, especially from the Yakima Valley/Horse Heaven Hills that can be cheap.

Pinot gris/grigio can vary drasrically based on growing conditions and winemaking style. If you don't like one, try one at the other end of the spectrum- typically those labeled 'grigio' are stylistically light and lean, so try an Alsatian pinot gris- usually much richer, with more spice flavors and somrtimes even a smokiness from the type of soil there.

Also, as >>16541072 points out, there are TONS of white varietals out there. Try a north rhone style blend (marsanne/roussanne) for a wine with richness comparable to a chard but more nutty/beeswax/quince and less butter/caramel. Try a grenache blanc, or a dry chenin- especially with some age. Try some of the dozens and dozens off less-known regional types.

>>16541057
There are general guidelines but it's not as easy as that. You decant less as the wine ages, and decant more on wines with strong tannins. Eventually you'll get a feel for what the wine needs- if it gives the impression of being 'closed' (dull/muted aroma) then it probably needs more oxygen.

A lot of things.

Sometimes.

>If I want to get into wine, what should I start with?
Riesling and Gamay (Beaujolais) are very good options because they're fruity and easygoing. That being said if you'd like something heavier, try out a Merlot or Zinfandel. For these latter two, try not to buy the cheapest wine available, you may not like it.

Does anyone here use any rating sites to pick wines?

I currently have a bit of a side programming project where I scrape wines on vivino.com and my country's alcohol monopoly store* and correlate them using fuzzy string matching.
Found a bunch of pretty good value wines that way, but one thing I noticed is that these tend to sway very much to the high alcohol side. Is that generally a thing with wine ratings? I guess it's the same with beers..

* It's the Norwegian Vinmonopolet. Kinda sucks that there's only one place to buy stuff, but OTOH they have some pretty wide offerings and better wines aren't even that expensive since they operate at cost.

I do take a quick look at vivino and look at the reviews and then click of the reviewer if they seem to have a lot of wine reviews to try and see if they have a wine qualification, they normally list it if they do and they are normally the people who have tried a lot of wines.

The other thing I do is use wine searcher and then click on reviews wine searcher lists how many points a wine got based on reviews in Decanter, Wine Enthusiast, Jancis Robinson and other renowned wine magazines or wine reviewers. every single glass of wine i have ever had - cheap, expensive or retardedly expensive - tasted the same, you may taste some very mild flavour but the alcohol just covers it anyways

same with any other type of alcoholic drinks, i don't get it, are people just lying that they taste something that's written on the bottle to cope with the fact that they are just trying to get wasted?

Try to find a good independent shop and ask for accessible wines, maybe a good Beaujolais. If you've only had supermarket/badly stored wine I can understand it's all shit to you. And yes, people do drink alcohol for the taste, it might not be the case for you.

>accessible Piedmont wines
There's tons of stellar wine there that's less expensive, it just doesn't have the name recognition of, say, barolo or barbaresco, so it's often a bit of a hunt.

Langhe is your best bet for pure value, but it's really worth trying to find good vintages of it, as the quality is a lot more variable than barolo (imo). Gattinara is also a good region for value. If you want top tier nebbiolo without as drastic a price, Roero DOCG is probably your best bet. It only recently got its DOCG status so it's not as well known and thus way cheaper than barolo/barbaresco.

If you just want something cool and don't mind if it's both rare AND expensive, look for a wine called sforzato- essentially amarone made ffom nebbiolo.

Pic related I got from Costco recently and was surprised by the quality for like $12.

How do you guys deal with bottles of wine that you already opened? I love drinking a whole bottle in one evening, but that's not always practical when you just want to have a glass with dinner. I use those little bottle stoppers and put it in the fridge but it never tastes as good as the first day, particularly the reds.

No, it has plenty to do with marketing. Most people don't even know about most Italian wines, and we fail at selling them.

>ask nutella etc.
Specific individual brands, like those you mention, are very good at marketing.
The problem with our wine industry is that most denominations are awful at working like a team. Too many people think only about their little garden and not the big picture.

San Daniele or Grana Padano are exceptions.

If you go somewhere that has a good tasting menu I 100% recommend doing wine pairings. You get to try a bunch of things, they're carefully chosen to pair well, and they can afford to open some cooler stuff than the things on the by-the-glass list since you'll almost always sell a good amount of the pairings, thus limiting your open-bottle waste cost.

As for the thread question, not drinking anything tonight but really curious to try my bottle of a Galician wine called Albamar Albino- it's a blanc de noirs of a rare native grape called caino tinto, which is then aged under flor like a fino or manzanilla sherry. Should definitely be interesting

it will preserve your wine for a month or two--if you ONLY coravin it once
the moment you do it more than once, you've got maybe a week

the question is who the fuck has one glass of wine and then puts the bottle away, or who can't drink a wine over the course of 3 days after opening it, or who would rather spend 200-700 dollars on a conversational piece of limited-use technology rather than 200 dollars on a really nice wine

I am not expert on wine by any means
but I kinda like it as the taste and smell is subtle and you kinda train your senses trying to find something in wine. Unfortunately for cheap wine you need to really look for recommendations (e.g. vivino or internet) as otherwise at best it's just bland (sometimes more expensive wines can be too) or at worst it's undrinkable and I would simply prefer regular beer.
I think there is a reason why aristocracy liked and propagated (and still do) sex, wine, gourmet foods, arts and music. It trains and stimulates all 5 of your senses: touch, smell, taste, sight and hearing making you more alive.
You can find a lot of things in good more expensive wine and it can be really interesting journey. Unfortunately lunch becomes way too expensive really quick...

Install vivino app and buy wine for at least 30$ that has rating more than 4. That way it's a good chance you will try something real and from there you can start your journey to find something cheaper that is also good and fit your taste. Cheap wines for plebs are usually just kind of bland acidic drink that I agree is not that good and better just stick with beer.
Btw prepare some steak to accompany your good wine - both together will taste so much better.

Irony is that this is bottom shelf here, still very good though. Cloudy Bay is "the" sauv that everyone raves about, $40 - $60 a bottle even here and is a very good example of NZ sauv, everyone should try it once. There are a few good albarinos that come out of Marlborough as well. Nautilus does a nice one.

Central Otago pinot noir is excellent. Sam Neill's wine (Two Paddocks) is unironically very good and you should try it if you ever get the opportunity. Other notable producers are Chard Farm, Akarua, Peregrine. Misha's Vineyard produces a decent riesling. They are making some excellent pinot up in Martinborough as well.

Waiheke Island syrah is the world's best kept secret. Look out for anything from Stonyridge or Man'o'War.

Finally if you ever set your eyes on anything from Ostler you shouldn't think twice. Their Caroline's pinot noir is incredible and they do a fantastic riesling. They are based in the Waitaki Valley which is a lesser known newer NZ wine region to look out for.

Generosos are a blessing. I actually ended up falling in love with Manzanilla and Cream, a mixture of Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez. It's a shame I can't find any here and while I can find them online cheap, shipping costs are stupidly high.
I'm probably a pleb for saying Canasta and Solear are my favorites, but I didn't have much time to explore. And there's so many options that you'll never finish trying them all.
A bit unrelated, but avoid any beer from that region, Andalucia makes great wine, but their beer is basically piss.
