Because the tax man needs his cut. Though, in many states, unprepared food items are tax exempt.

>Eurostan has VAT.

Food isn't taxed unless it's a commie area with sin taxes on junk food.

Someone's gotta pay for those folks who just don't feel like working, god bless 'em!

It's called sales tax and it's added on at the end based on your total bill, not added to each individual item. Also the percentage can vary down to the city level. So I could buy stuff in Town A and then go buy that exact same stuff in Town B and pay a different price because each town has a different amount of sales tax.

pretty much this is so that they don't have to print different price stickers for places/states with different tax rates.

But they already do that. The Targets here have different prices depending on which neighborhood you're shopping in. And at Jewel, they make us scan the entire department every week to generate tags for the week's sales. So why don't (((they))) just include the tax in the shelf price?

so you pay more at checkout obviously
they can advertize something to be sold for $0.99 when in reality it comes out to $1.07 or something, that way they don't have to lower their margins

It's the same reason servers and delivery drivers make most of their wage from tips: so the owner can make more profit by jewing both his employees and customers.

Taxman gets his cut here too, but the percentage is already included in the price tag.

stores aren't forced by law to include sales taxes in the display prices so they're not going to. it makes them more money AND makes the taxing agencies more money (higher price). Otherwise they'd have to lower the price to make the price+tax equal to whatever display price makes people buy more ($x.99). Plus sales taxes can be a bit variable and depend on a lot of factors. Local municipal sales taxes, special tax districts, city and county taxes, and state taxes. They can also have different tax rates based on types of items. Unprepared food items are usually cheapest with prepared food and non food items higher (sometimes double). then some places have "sin" taxes on things like soda and junk food or cigarettes and alcohol. Some places don't have sales taxes at all.
