Probably has to do with brewers preferring the pint as a familiar and traditional serving size for beer, but needing to stay within agreement of EU metric standards.
Metric measurements are fucking retarded because they're cold, inhuman.

Elsewhere in Germany beers are sold in 0.5L bottles and I believe that to be the standard serving size for beer at home. Also, there's Kölsch, which is served in 0.2L glasses (at i.e. restaurants) and yet, they're sold in 0.5L bottles at the supermarket.

Belgian beer is served in 0.33L bottles. So I would say it's geographical proximity.

33 cl bottles are the norm in Denmark and Switzerland and The Netherlands too, from personal experience. 50 cl are outliers.

For bottles maybe, but the vast majority of calculations made at any given moment have little regard to human aesthetics.
And at the end of the day the mass of the bottle alone isn't that big of a creative strain, ignoring other standards.

I am northern German and I never even thought of that. I mean you can get every bier in 0,3 even weißbier, but it's not that common. I think the underlying reason is that northern Germans in contrast to our southern counterparts are NOT FUCKING SUBHUMANS WHO ENDLESSLY NEED TO COMSUME LARGE QUANTITIES OF ALKOHOL. we know how to enjoy ourselves in an honorable way instead of puking all over ourselves at the Wisn Kotzhügl (pic rel)

It's closer to a standard bottle of beer (40ish mL shy of 12 oz), whereas 5dL is basically a metric pint. There's probably an economic reason, local law, or sales mimicry in there somewhere. >tl;dr: I have no idea why.

>>16509456
Or is it 473mL? A pint's a pound the world around, except for all the times it's not.

0.5l is way closer to a pint than 0.33 dummy
0.33l is roughly equivalent to the standard 12oz bottle you see in America

You beer is more carbonated if you drink small bottles, which i prefer. Also by that logic you could buy those czech 1.5l plastic bottles.

How long do you guys need to finish a 0.5L Pilsner style beer? Doesn't really matter if you drink 0.3L or 0.5L beer out of a glass. They lose carbonation at the same rate. Maybe, you'd need to drink the 0.5L beer a little faster so that the 0.2L difference does not get stale but so far I've never had that issue.

I've only bought those 1.5L plastic bottles for occasions that prohibit glass bottles, lol.

plenty of beer in the UK is sold in that size as well. Is it that weird?

>> No.16512037

Might be the standard bottle size around the globe. Everything larger than that is considered a large beer, I think. In Germany 0.5L is currently the most common bottle size. I was a little bit thrown off by the 'small' beers when I visited Hamburg the other week.

>> No.16512077

>>16512037
>In Germany 0.5L is currently the most common bottle size
I wouldn't say that. Outside of Bavaria/the south 0.5l is mostly just a choice of price and not really preference. A crate of 24*0.33l costs the same as a 20*0.5l one so you get 2l more with the latter one. Then there's also the 30*0.33l crates, but those are often cheaper beers associated with working class, students or parties.

I've lived in the east of Germany (ex-GdR) and here 0.5l are the standard beer bottle size. Maybe, the north is just different. Not sure about the most western states of Germany. (Rheinland Pfalz, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Saarland)

I don't know how credible this source is. They say that the NRW bottle (0.5l) is the most sold beer bottle type; hence, most sold beers are 0.5l. (https://www.sueddeutsche.de/panorama/getraenke-die-verschiedenen-bierflaschen-im-ueberblick-1.3181913))
