So I just turned 21 recently and got gifted a bottle of pic related, been drinking just beer the last couple of days and tonight I decided to open this bad boy up and give it a try. That was a mistake. It tastes like someone mixed a box of hot tamales with rubbing alcohol and cough syrup to me.

So my question for the whiskey wizards here is, what is a good not too expensive whiskey for a drinkbab like myself?

neck pours(the initial impressions from the first pour or pours from a bottle) can be volatile. not saying will definitely get better, but you may be able to salvage it by making cocktails as that is probably its reason for being. something simple like a highball by just mixing with ginger ale/beer and lots of ice(lemon queeze/garnish optional) or old fashioned(sugar cube or simple syrup and a maraschino cherry crushed together with a dash of bitters and add ice). personally I'd probably try it in a root beer float. worse comes to worse you can always trade whats left for sexual favors from a homeless/druggie.

Well like the other anon said make cocktails with your jack honey, but there’s a million resources online which walk you through how to start drinking whiskey. Try out a big name but not too expensive whiskey like jim beam, makers mark, jameson, bulleit, buffalo trace, bushmills, etc. You can find these in smaller pint bottles usually so you don’t have to commit to a whole bottle. Then you can narrow down what type you like, whether it’s irish, scotch, bourbon, et cetra, and then you can find out which brands to try from there. Everyone has their favorites so no one can tell you the best whiskey to start with, you have to find it for yoursef

Laphroaig Four Oak and Talisker Port Ruighe only I think.

The four oak wasn't very good. IMO a whisky can improve with a second barrel, but definitely gets worse every barrel after that.
Port Ruighe I think is too similar to the Distillers edition (sherry), but is strictly worse at the same price.

to me infinity bottle seems risky. the wannabe whskeynerd at one of the stores i frequent is always making small talk about his(which he uses a Buffalo Trace bottle for)and is allegely "half old rip van winkle", but never offers me any and ifbi ask its "tasting hours are Saturday only }=|" and is always trying to get me into the monthly raffle for the same bottle. i sneer and ask "isnt that a wheater?!" to which he replies "yeah, its awesome!" then i be like "lol no rye, no buy." but they are like the only smaller store that gets picks so i tolerate it. i feel like going in one day and being a total jackass about wine by picking up a cheap brandy and asking if its a good italian red.

I agree it's risky. That's why I've put in so little over so long. And as much as I've called it an infinity bottle, I've never refilled it. I'll make the call depending on how it tastes. If it works, great, extra variety. If not I'll turn it back into moonshine and drink it with coke.

From what I hear it's unlikely to be undrinkable, improves with more time if it is, and can be blended back into drinkability though I'm not keen on sending good money after bad.

And if I'm lucky it ends up as a proportionate representation of my whisky preferences. Minus a bit of fuckery because there's 30ml of whisky I don't like in there, and 30ml of Australian Rye.

For me it's Alberta Premium.

But points go to Royal Reserve for the cool label that you can peel off that acts as a sticker that you can stick on random things to leave a mark in a drunken haze.
