Visiting my uncle, had my first taste of Trappist ale, proper glass and all. I think this is peak beer - honestly, don't see how you could get better than this. I'm a big fan of Bavarian imports usually, but this monk stuff is next level.

Discuss your favorite Teappist ale or any other beer.

it's good but I just switched to drinking fortified wine instead

It's always import fags who cream over this shit. It's so overrated it's retarded.

I love Westvleteren, La Trappe and Orval (tastes like sweet gum). I had a bar and I had 50 bears, 15 Belgium ones, 6 Trappists. They really do grow on you.

American breweries are almost all lagers or IPAs. If I want a hefeweissen, Belgian ale, etc, the import options are better than domestic. That's just the current beer enviornment. What would you propose otherwise? Imports aren't just magically better than domestic, they're de facto the best option for this style of beer.

Yeah, it's not for poorfags. Shoo shoo now, grownups and men with taste and/or money are talking.

Yeah. I was selling Westvleteren for 40-80€ (50 to 100 usd). As it's known as the beer you can buy.

Any idea what the best way to buy this in the USA is? I recently started a new job, want to treat myself to celebrate. If you'd vouch that it's truly the world's best beer, I'd pay the premium.

Westy 12 and Abt 12 (basically the same) are top tier. Rochefort 10 is too sweet.

Any opinion on where Chimay stands among the trappists? Curious whether I'm on the higher or lower end.

definitely high tier. The Grand Reserve i'd give an 8.5/10. Westmalle is also up there

That's simply not true. I can get any style from an American brewery, local or national. It's really not difficult

Money isn't a problem. There are just great beers in the US if you branch out a bit from your typical routine

The HEB (central TX chain grocery store) near my house used to have a wonderful beer aisle with trappist ales and imports. Then the area got culturally enriched and the beer aisle became almost nothing but 24 packs of pisswater and now I have to drive to the liquor store for good beer and it usually costs more. That same HEB also removed the weigh stations in the produce section and the self-checkout right around when they gutted the beer aisle but I'm sure those things are unrelated.

>> No.16489329

A large part of the appeal of trappist beers is the romantic idea that it's being made by monks, but does that make a beer taste better? Obviously not. I mean De Prael is a Dutch brewery who have a bunch of literal retards as employees and their beer tastes pretty good, regardless of how many people drooled in the kettle.

>> No.16489354

i only want to purchase beers from company's that require their employees to be vaccinated. is there something like a label to look out for? if not, there should definitely be one.

I'm still trying to understand beers like lambics. I've had some that were so fucking sour that it took like an hour to finish the bottle. Very close to pure vinegar, not something you can glug down.. What is the protocol for that style of beer?

They're served at room temp or slightly chilled. Colder = more percieved acidity.

Generally you'll have a gueuze, which is a blend of 1,2, and maybe 3 and 4 year aged lambic. Different breweries blend to different levels of funky flavors and acidity, so you just need to find the brewery you like. Cantillon is considered best, but Drie fonteinen, tilquinn, Boon, Girardin.

They age extremely well also, so you can cellar them to improve taste.

Chilly Bleu is OK but peak Belgian Trappist is Rochefort 10 or Westvleteren XII

*Chimay Bleu

also I should add that as a Belgian, it’s almost easier to find Orval in other European countries than in Belgium itself. They should really readjust the quantity they make available for export.
