Rum is much more spiced than imagined. Even the aged varieties I tried are leagues more potent than a rye whiskey. I nearly spit out my first drink. I had Doorly's.

Bourbons definitely are the smoothest drink, at least the ones which are relatively avaliable and affordable. I think XO Cognacs are only better.

Kaniche is really good for the price, and there are MANY rums like it that kick ass for under 40 dollars. You simply can't get great Scotch, or Whiskey, or Rye for the same price.

This is due to two main factors. Rum is mostly made in tropical climate. It's thought that a Caribbean Rum ages almost 3x faster than a spirit in a cold climate. This allows a much younger drink to have a maturity and complexity like a 20 year old Scotch, or Cognac, in a fraction of the time, so cheaper to produce.
Also Rum just isn't "fancy" yet. Scotch has always been respected, and all the American Whiskeys are enjoying a huge renaissance. Whiskey is the drink of statesmen, Don Draper, it has a better more sophisticated image.
Rum is still thought of as pirate swill, navy grog, distilled from rotten fruit in nasty kettles by colonized niggers. Rum is also harder to classify, being made all over the world for over 400 years, it lacks the polish of other spirits. All why I believe Rum's day is coming
