Been getting into Tiki cocktails recently and I've really been enjoying them. Finally got round to buying all of the things I need for a Zombie and I'm going to be trying it out this weekend, though I still need to make the syrups (grenadine and cinnamon, I've got a bottle of demerera syrup ready). Been gradually building up rums and finally decided to pick up some Falernum and Pernod online. Anyone else here into these drinks? Also how into Tiki in general have you gone? I've bought a mug and I'm considering buying a few more for specific drinks but I haven't exactly gone buying hawaiian shirts or more extreme aspects.

just buy premade mixers, you'll save yourself a lot of time and money hunting down rare or exotic fruits, juices, and syrups that don't have many uses.

I've gone pretty deep into Tiki, it's super fun. It's a thing you have to dedicate yourself to, I find. I've got two mugs, a Hawaiian shirt (come on, you need one). I've bought a lot of Beachbum Berry's books, including his book on the recipes of Tiki, it's all interesting shit. I think that with Tiki, it's best to start small so you understand flavor profiles. Grapefruit-Cinnamon-Lime is a super common one.

jesus christ what an absolutely retarded take. Daiquiris are the most delicious drink conceivable and a painkiller doesn't particularly come close. Do you even know what a daiquiri actually is?

Try a jungle bird, fog cutter, queen's park swizzle, or a chartreuse swizzle.

Learn the golden ratios and you can just make up your own cocktails.
Every cocktail has 4 possible parts. (not including garnish)
-Sour
-Sweet
-Strong
-Weak

The daiquiri is one of the quintessential basic cocktails you can possibly make.
-1 part sour (lime juice)
-1 part sweet (sugar)
-2 parts strong (rum)

yeah 2 parts alcohol to 6 parts sugar, that's definitely an upgrade if you're a dick sucking faggot who can't handle alcohol.
This video is for you.

You're thinking of the wrong stuff, the Daiquiri is basically a Rum Sour (2 oz rum, 1 oz simple syrup, 1 oz lime juice). Not the blender Daiquiris, I'll concur with you that those are positively fucking disgusting.

>>16420175
Technically pineapple juice is weak and orange juice straddles the line of sour and sweet and weak.

technically any liquid not containing alcohol is a weakener, as the alcohol gets diluted, but pineapple juice is loaded with sugar.
This just looks like the type of drink that a pedophile would invent to get children drunk.

The best thing is to cut the amount of pineapple juice to match the amount of rum, like in most modern versions of the Jungle Bird.

I really like the Missionarys Downfall. Although it's a pain in the ass to make and i triple the amount of rum while cutting half of the sweeteners.
In general i prefer the more simple drinks in Trader Vic style. I also recommened starting with Vic's drinks, because they just need the same often easy to get ingredients. Donn's drinks are nice but measuring all those tiny amounts of shit from a dozen bottles suck. Especially small ass amounts of grapefruits while a grapefruit gives you at least 20 times as much juice. Also in the end it just tastes like absinth when you exactly follow his recipes. I guess you need that less pungent fake US absinth to actually recreate his drinks.

>technically any liquid not containing alcohol is a weakener, as the alcohol gets diluted, but pineapple juice is loaded with sugar.
I mean, yeah, but weak in the context of Tiki drinks is one specific type of dilution - from ice, carbonated water, and pineapple juice (because when shaken it froths up). Orange juice is technically under sour (on the 1 part sour, 2 parts sweet, 3 parts strong, 4 parts weak and a dash of spice to make it nice rhyme which to be fair ends up mostly skewed towards 2 parts sour, 2 parts sweet, 4 parts strong, 4 parts weak most of the time), but it's also really sweet, so it rarely is used all on its own and instead paired with lime juice or lemon juice because those are significantly brighter and more acidic.

Cocktails aren't an exact science.

And some of the best tiki drinks are literally a small amount of juices and syrups to balance out a whole bunch of different rums. A zombie has four ounces of rum to about 2 ounces of juices and syrups for instance.

I actually really like the whole concept of tiki bars and the whole manufactured space, but is it just me or are most people online who are visibly into it fat nerds who like it because they went to Disneyland as a kid? Like I legit kinda want to make my own home tiki bar but I don't want to be associated with those people.

True (especially given that it's not too dissimilar from the Sour in principle), and there's always those with a blend of spirits, but I've always found that the drinks that lean on pineapple juice to parallel more highballs like the Tom Collins than anything because of sheer volume. There was definitely an overabuse of pineapple at one point (the era which the Painkiller developed, the 70's and 80's), but the ideal Tiki drink should skew somewhere between 2:1 or at worst 1:1 booze to everything else. The flavor combination of coconut, nutmeg, orange and pineapple isn't bad - the cocktail is just kind of poorly balanced.

One of the best Tiki drinks I had lately was based on Jagermeister of all things, featuring Plantation's Pineapple Rum, Jagermeister, Coconut Liqueur and Lime Juice in equal parts, really unique result. Pretty a Surfer on Acid that was heightened into something similar to a Last Word.

Yeah, I agree. With the Jungle Bird as >>16421590 says, it tastes fantastic with one and a half or two ounces of pineapple juice. I tried the original 70s ratio and the pineapple was just too much for the rest of the cocktail to really come through. For a Painkiller to really make it a tiki drink rather than just a boat drink, I'd amp up the rum to three ounces (and probably have another rum in there, so two ounces of a good blended rum and then maybe an ounce of somethning to add extra dimension) and reduce the pineapple to either three or two ounces.

There's a lot of those dudes, the thing that you're missing the key here is "online". A lot of the people there are old punk dudes, and that's who it's associated with (and guess what, a lot of dudes in punk scenes to this day love this stuff). Ultimately, though, much like any subculture, it goes best when you meet people that are also into it. Go to a local Tiki bar or Tiki event, those are fun.

For what it's worth, my Painkiller specs are 2 oz Gosling's (for what it's worth, I think they're perfectly fine for a dark, general blend rum - it's also cheap as hell which is a point in its favor), 1 oz Wray & Nephew, 1.5 oz fresh pineapple juice (I just use frozen pineapple chunks and blend them with water), 0.75 oz homemade cream of coconut (following Smuggler's Cove recipe), 0.75 oz fresh orange juice, fresh grated nutmeg on top, poured over cracked ice. I think that a lot of the "weak" that's present in most tiki drinks comes from the ice, not just in direct dilution from the shaking but also the steady one as you drink it.
