A few years ago, before I had saved up for a car, I would walk home from work and little Caesar's was on the way. I'd stop in there on fridays and shoot the shit with the disaffected employees and get a large pepperoni for 5 bux. After a while I got so well known that they'd already be making my order when I walked in and they'd throw in extra stuff like more toppings or sides and shit. Shortly after I bought a car and changed jobs the place began getting robbed almost weekly and had to shut down.

A few years back, an ex-girlfriend and I hit up a new Thai restaurant in town at the end of their first week being open. We had no idea how new they were, just that there was a new place to try. There were no Thai restaurants previously, so we were interested and wanted to give it a shot.

We went there on a late-ish Sunday afternoon and it was really quiet. Only a couple of other tables were active (maybe 10% capacity), and we struck up a conversation with someone we later found out was the owner. We talked about how we were excited for a new Thai place, we were looking for something different than the usual Chinese, and so on, and they were talking about how they were new in town but had been a restauranteur elsewhere and wanted to give it a shot. Anyway, the owner ended up bringing us like half orders of all the appetizers and a couple of other entree samples in addition to our primary order, as well as one of their specialty desserts. When we were finished, they only charged us for entrees and not even for our drinks. We ended up leaving a fat tip as thanks, and of course they won a loyal customer over the years, but it's just one of those unexpected things you tend not to forget when you're trying a new place.
