It's like malta, or champagne cola, just another weird local soda flavor that is an acquired taste, that really only locals can stand, and therefore their sales aren't as large worldwide as an ordinary Coke or 7-up which just appeals to more.
Never think for a second it'll outsell Coke right where it's the most popular. It doesn't.
It is not expensive, and not too hard to find as an import, so just try it.

I agree anise sounds nasty. There's no anise in moxie and it doesn't taste like anise or licorice or whatever. It's flavored with gentian root. The only flavor I can compare it to would be herbal bitters but being soda it's much sweeter and nonalcoholic

The 1901 variant in the glass bottle is really nice, if a little expensive. Tastes like how Irn Bru used to taste. Not a fan of the new recipe, which uses artificial sweeteners and less sugar to avoid the sugar tax. Tizer, Irn Bru, and Red Kola are my fave pops.
