The Vietnam-era pilot survival kit is really cool. I don't think there's even any food in it, aside from maybe some chewing gum. It's mostly first aid and some neat fishing and survival gear. That video can stand alone on its own merit.

Eh, sort of. That is like a kit stowed in a plane. Used when say, the plane is fucked and going down. The crew need something to keep them alive when they jump out and land. Air crews don't typically keep much in the way of weapons/tools for ground use on them because you know, they are air men. They are meant to stay in the air til they land back at base safely.

You have to qualify what you mean by “good”.
Are modern MRE’s delicious meals which you’d happily substitute for something you made at home, or something from a restaurant you enjoy?
Fuck no.
But if you’re in a situation where eating one makes sense, it feels like an absolute luxury.
I used to bring MRE’s when I did remote exploratory drilling work. Often in tundra-type places with no support facilities, even temp ones. Basically a tent.
Being able to have a hot meal at the end of the day was the one thing I could look forward to. It beat the hell out of instant or dehydrated stuff, and was much more manageable than trying to pack ingredients, prep stuff, utensils, camp stove, etc.
I wasn’t even being shot at, and that chemically-heated pouch was the high point of my day. I can only imagine the sort of morale boost it would give to someone trying to survive combat.

The old ones he eats are fascinating purely from a historical context though. Would I eat a WW2 ration in decent condition? Fuck yeah. Simply for no other reason than feeling a minor sensory connection with that part of history.

Field rations are made to an order of priorities:
1) adhere to standards of caloric and nutritional requirements for a soldier in the field
2) be able to be stored for a long time without spoiling (usually also set out in nutritional or other standards for field rations), also fitting certain size requirements
3) be as cheap as possible
4) taste good

Note that tasting good is the last priority.
