Had some 5 Guys and the beef tasted rather bland compared to Wendy's. Never cooked a patty before, I read only salt and pepper goes on the beef.

You don't have to no, but I'd at least use salt if flavor is a concern.

that's what i though too that a burger only needed salt and pepper so that the condiments and other fillings should enhance the flavor but then again im a plain cheeseburger with no condiments type of dude

How did you taste the beef when it's covered by salt, pepper, grease, bread and several toppings.

I’d also add a little onion. One of these days I’ll work on a curry burger, though.

anything more than salt and pepper is pretentious.
If you want more flavor, just choose a sauce.

Personally I put the seasoning in the middle of the patty; I divide the lump of ground beef into two halves, sprinkle a generous amount on the cut sides of each half, rejoin them and then squish flat into the shape, followed by salting the outside. In my experience that works better than putting the seasonings all on the outside as they don't get burned when grilling over a fire or searing on a hot surface. It's a bit more work, but worth it in my opinion.
