What's the preferred food items I should bring along with me when I plan to spend time in some woods camping? I know I have to be very careful when It comes to animals. Are there containers that will keep scents from escaping? I don't want a bear destroying my stuff :(

>> No.16365855

No worries, OP: bears are your friend.
If a bear finds its way to your camp, invite it and share some of your food with it.
Do not act scared or aggressive and the bear will respond with kindness.
Just don't forget to bring some honey, we love that stuff.

Out will have better info. Don't cook near where you sleep. If there are bears you'll need to cache your food, and anything scented, toothpaste etc., in a tree.

Been watching local foraging peoples. There is actually a lot of stuff you can just eat in nature. Don't touch mushrooms though... and get some traps from the feed store. Make stew out of rabbits and stuff. It's fun.

Real talk, you can secure your food in a bearproof container, but your best bet is to hang it >10 ft off the ground in a bear bag, not directly adjacent to your tent.

You should bring some meat, maybe beef for the evening, bacon for the morning. Potatoes too. Keep it simple.

It's what I did when I went backpacking with the scouts. What did you do with your food when you were a kid? Get it out of the cupboard and go back to playing videogames?

Sorry man, that was rude.

If you store your food in a bearproof container or a bear bag you'll be alright. Just don't store it right in your main camp. If you have a cooler, put it back inside a vehicle.

What kind of bears/predators do you have where you live? In general, the noise of humans and the smoke from a fire are enough to warn off animals. Carrying a gun is good insurance though.

I was a girl scout. It was Indigo Girls with daddy long legs. It's okay that you spent your childhood indoors. You didn't miss out on much. The latrine that was just set on a concrete block in the middle of the woods, dumping your friends out of the Sunfish, learning dirty songs from the English counselor you couldn't sing at camp. Shit memories, really.

I don't think California has grizz anymore. Not for almost a century.

But you do have brown and black bears, and big cats. You live in a cucked state, but you can still carry a handgun while in the woods. Just carry a big enough caliber.

Where in California you planning on going? Different places have different wildlife issues, like I'd bag and hang my shit in Siskiyou/Modoc but would worry more about exposure and hillbilly hijinx in Trinity

Smoked cheese and smoked sprats in a can. Bring a gun or two, and a large buck knife. Bait the bear out with an empty sprats can, and shoot it in the dome. Gut and clean it, then smoke it. Bring it back home, make bear pemmican. Just watch for any parasites, wa la
