Alright lads, lets to a civilized liquor thread.

Everything Whiskey/Scotch/Bourbon/Rye/Brand/Rum/Vodka/Gin is welcome.

Few questions to get us going:
>Irish or Scotch Whiskey? Why?
>Armagnac or Cognac? Why?
>Bourbon or Rye? Why?
>Favorite Botanical in Gin?
>What makes a good Vodka?
>Best Rum making country?
>Best Rum brand?
>Best local spirit (you're or other country) that you've ever had? Explain it.

Irish for drinking, Scotch for sipping because Irish is subtle and so light on flavor you go back to the glass so often that you pour 3 or 4 glasses in a single sitting. Scotch has more backbone and a sip will last you 5- 10 mins at least. Never had any 'yac because I dont know enough to make a purchase. High Rye Bourbon, Rye can be more one note than bottom shelf bourbon. Last time I had Gin I was shooting New Amsterdam at my brother in-laws birthday. Depression ;^) ... Venezuela. Couldnt say. Never had one to my knowledge.

- Irish if I'm feeling good, Scotch if I'm feeling stressed or masochistic
- Cheap Armagnac, expensive-ish Cognac, not sure why, just where my tastes have come to lie on them.
- Usually Rye, I find the butteriness under most Bourbons to linger a bit too long.
- I like a bit of lavender or lemongrass in gins I'd drink with tonic, and angelica in gins I'd splash with vermouth, and maybe amaro.
- I like my vodka's clean. Just enough burn to know there's ethanol in there.
- I'm not big enough on rum to name proper brands, but I've enjoyed some darker Jamaican rums straight (or straight-enough).
- My neighbours make rakia from the sweet plums in their backyard (it's supposed to be sour plums - slivovice if memory serves). I'm sure they're cranking it up to at least 160 proof, but it's still got a bit of fruitiness to it... but in a way that's definitely white brandy and not rum.

Scotch. Way more complexity and variety, usually.

not experienced enough to say. Depends a lot on the actual. Tough to generalize brandy, IMO.

Lagavulin is good though.

Ignoring islay, I've tried 18 year old Talisker, Old Pulteney, and Highland Park (which were all peated). Every one of them I found incredibly disappointing as they have represented the smallest amount of improvement for the most money I have come across.
And it's not 18 year old's in general, Speysides improve a lot with a little extra age.

Go for it though, and post findings.

If you're getting an aged Bowmore for around the same price then go for it. The 15 is $110 and the 18 $185 here, so I wouldn't touch them given the 12 was boring.

It surprises me how much different methods of affect the flavor of the liquor. whatever this product is it looks obnoxious. Nobody needs a 28 6ear old Irish whiskey and nobody needs yet another port cask finished whiskey. This whiskey will taste like old, thin burgundy wine with a fat kick of alcohol all compressed into what amounts to a stale and corky cherry cordial. >Irish or Scotch Whiskey? Why?
Ohh though question.
I like scotch immensely, but recently I've really enjoyed Irish whiskey.
Irish is much nicer to sip than scotch which can be too complex.
Recommend me an Irish and I'll pick it up.

>Irish or Scotch Whiskey? Why?
Scotch because it has a greater range of flavors
>Armagnac or Cognac? Why?
Armagnac, it's just as good or better and cheaper
>Bourbon or Rye? Why?
Bourbon, rye is simplistic in its flavors and bourbon has a lot more variety in flavors
>Favorite Botanical in Gin?
idk, but Martin Miller's Westbourne Strength is the best gin I've had and the only one I actually enjoy sipping
>What makes a good Vodka?
no such thing
>Best Rum making country?
any of the french or british ones, fuck the spanish ones
>Best Rum brand?
Plantation, has a good variety and all their rums are good and reasonably priced, especially the pineapple rum is one of a kind
>Best local spirit (you're or other country) that you've ever had? Explain it.
I'll just say sherry since I've been getting into it. Complex and doesn't taste like standard wines. It's under the radar so it's reasonably priced for the age and complexity. Since it doesn't have the hype of other spirits, a lot of producers are making it because of tradition or pride in a regional product.

I picked up a bottle of cask strength armagnac, which is much better than the delord XO I had before. It actually has good and strong aroma thanks to the abv. I couldn't smell much from the delord except when the glass was empty. I wish armagnac and cognac makers would bottle at an actually decent proof like 46%.

>>16369439
I recommend the Bowmore 15. I haven't had the 12 so I can't speak for how it compares, but I thought the 15 was pretty rich/heavy on flavor. The peat isn't as strong as laphroaig or ardberg, but it's much stronger than highland park. I thought the peat and sherry influence were both strong and balanced, and the peat definitely isn't in the background. Imo laga 16 is weak and tastes like nothing and ardberg uig has peat that overwhelms the sherry influence.

Old Grandad 114 or Knob Creek. When going to The Knob the further you go from 40% abv the less sweet it should be, going older will also add more wood to the profile. Also Four Roses generally isnt as sweet as it is savory, but with a honey tone(more floral or vegetal)at the center.

I don't know what price range you were thinking but remedy liquor has Delamain Pale & Dry for $80 (the local Total Wine sells it for $125). In Finland it is called Viina, just a clear spirit that is normally produced at 38%ABV. But because of EU trade regulations it is labeled as Vodka for the foreign market. It is also distilled to 40 or 60% ABV for the foreign market to be considered meeting standards for vodka.

Guess it's just being autistic with definitions. It's very tasty with a clear and defined taste of rye. The only vodka drink that I like to drink neat. Also it's about $20 for a 750ml so not expensive.

Assuming your American I'd try a nice bourbon as it'll be cheaper than a good scotch and you'll have a lot to explore if you like it. Most people start cheap and climb up, but if you want a nice bottle Blanton's would be the normie choice. I don't want to recommend it because you'll probably have to pay a lot more than MSRP, but as far as fancy but good for beginner bourbons it goes over very well with new drinker's speaking from experience. Don't pay more than 100 for the regular Blanton's bottle. Alternatives would be well aged bourbons like 12 or 15 year knob creek, Calumet farm, Sam Houston, Old Carter, Kentucky Owl, or a batch that sounds good from Bardstown or Barrel Bourbon, as they make custom limited edition bourbon blends which are very good. Im trying to suggest nicer bottles that don't really go beyond 50 percent alcohol (100 proof) as even though that's what a lot of experienced drinkers like you are probably better off starting lower, so check the proof if you don't wanna get filtered by an alcohol burn. And when buying a nice bottle don't let a liquor store rip you off by paying a lot more than the MSRP price you can often find online.
