its all just personal taste, drink till you find something you like, start with bottom shelf stuff know it'll be cheaper and thus less good than top shelf but you'll get an idea of what spirits are

there isn't going to be much different in vodka vs price because its suppose to be flavor neutral.
gin is vodka but with aromatic herbs and juniper berries, big range of different flavors according to brand.
whiskey is an entire rabbit hole to fall down.
rum come in 3 types, white, dark and spiced. white is more neutral and dark is well dark, spiced is self explanatory.
tequila tastes bad and has cactus juice in it
asian alcohols are usually rice based and meh
beer is beer
wine is for women and queers

If nothing else this at least provides some pointers on what different drinks are characterized by, now I could for example legitimately say a spicy vodka is bad because it fails at being neutral. On the topic of whiskey and it being a rabbit hole, I understand the main point of it being an aged spirit and that it’s meant to be enjoyed by itself to appreciate the way the distillation infused the flavors. I also kinda grasped that the price is mostly affected by the cost of the spices and the aging process. But what makes whiskey high quality and not just expensive? because the makers could have aged it a unnecessarily long time or used pointless ingredients that don’t contribute. But obviously some whiskey is considered especially fine, is it just that everyone who tastes it agree it’s great or is there more to it?

yeah its the ageing and the flavors it picks up from the barrels. iirc it has to be aged at least 7 years with most being 10+. its a very complex taste compared to vodka/gin/rum. there's usually a whiskey general with a flavour flow chart that could point you in the right direction, i mostly drink gin and rum.
also nothing wrong with bottom shelf captain morgan spiced gold, great mixed with coke and lime juice
