There's an "omiyage" culture around region-specific flavors. They also have a broader palate that makes a larger variety of weird flavors possible. More generally the Japanese just fucking love novelty products for some reason. Put an American in front of 200 flavors of kit-kat and they'll buy the chocolate flavored one since it tastes like a kit-kat bar.
