Sure you can IMPORT them and sell them to rich Americans in the States but can you MAKE them? As long as they are still made in Europe, I believe the question posed in the OP is still relevant - namely, why are Americans forced to import these foods from Europe when their ancestors were European themselves? Why were these traditions lost in the States while they continued to flourish in Europe?

Some of the responses here point to capitalism as a cause and I think the idea has some merit, but I also think much of it can be blamed on the amalgamation of distinct European cultures into a generic American culture. Once French Americans, Italian Americans, and German Americans were no longer French, Italian, or German - what you end up with is a bastardized creole of European cuisines that tries to stoop down to the lowest common denominator.

I wonder how differently things might have turned out if the US had been a cultural mosaic with Germantowns, Italytowns, etc. flourishing to this day. I'd imagine they would not let go of their old traditions as easily.

Americans decided they wanted to go fuck off to California and create a gigantic dispersed country across an entire continent which means a lot of places didn't have good ingredients because half the country is a literal desert, so food supply had to change to accommodate for those gigantic distances.
It's basically as if France and Iraq were the same country, and you had to figure out a way to get everybody in that country the same food. You'd have to make things cheap, long-lasting, and easy to store. Canned food and lots of preservatives is the result.
