In many cases, yes...

Here on Brazil we do have a huge problem on the northern region involving modern day slavery! People are baited in from all regions of the country with the promisse of stable work, but once you get there they take away your documents, your phone and force you to work on cashew and coccoa plantations or at mines, both being gruelling jobs that cause severe health issues on the workers!

No, they cannot leave, they are killed if they attempt to do so.

You are literally supporting slavery, not at all different from the 17th century europeans drinking coffee produced in the colonies using slave labor!

The same happens on nearly every cashew producing region im afraid, you can see these kind of slave based plantations throughout Africa and Asia as well...

I don't really care if you continue eating them, but do so aware of the consequences of supporting said businesses.

There are many movements pushing for improvements on regulation of these productive regions and the general quality of life of workers, as well as attempts to fight against these modern day slavery rings, but currently these are unable to effectivelly prevent this from happening.

The guy gets $0.50 per pound of cashews he process. When you say "provide for his family" are you talking about the sack of corn flour he manages to buy to dissolve in water and make some gruel to keep them alive? How is that any different from old time slavery in which the slaves worked in exchange for some miserable gruel to feed themselves so they can live and work another day?

Are you demented or just plain evil?

how do you think beer was invented? back in the mesopotamian days rations were a barley sludge that was alcoholic. it kept workers happy. eventually they learned to make it with less wheat and more liquid. sailors were happy with the stuff too. grog only gets a bad reputation because they would dilute it with seawater when it was running low to keep grog supplies up for morale.

I want their fucking employer, who is making millions of dollars a year, to at the very fucking least pay each of these workers a fucking minimun wage, which is honeslty not even a lot but still far betrter than the miserable payment they are getting!

I am not fucking asking for a lot here, man! I just want these people to be paid the fucking minimun wage that is pre-determined by my country's law! This is the very least that any law abbiding citiizen should expect to be enforced by the government!

>To expect a worldwide boycott on cashews is delusional.
Just as delusional as expecting worldwide boycotts, both economically and artistic, on South Africa to support the end of the Apartheid? This is by no means an insignificant issue, it is one one the main issues that humanity must face to progress as a civilization!
