Tried Edradour 10 recently and was pleasantly surprised, it exceeded my expectations. I finally found some Laphroaig 10 Sherry Oak, it was a little pricey but I had to grab a bottle. Also found a place selling the 2020 Cairdeas release for $80 which was significantly cheaper than everywhere else I've seen it so I finally decided to buy that too. When I brought the Cairdeas up to the cashier, it wasn't in their system and the cashier clearly didn't know what she was doing so she rang it up as the regular Laphroaig 10. Ended up paying just over $50 for it.

i recently heard that Edradour is "the quite master" of sherried whisky and I need a new bottle of something sherry considering Edradour 10 and Glenmorangie 12 Lasanta, both around $50. biggest nod going to Edra as I've had Glenmo 14 Qunita Ruban, but never an Edra.

I definitely prefer the Edradour 10 to Lasanta. Glendronach 12 is usually my go to sherry cask Scotch though, I pretty much always keep a bottle on my shelf.

What does /ck/ think about Armagnac?

I'm a big whiskey fan, especially single pot still whiskey from Ireland, I love it because of the mouth feel. I'm also a brandy fan and have had a couple of different mid-range cognacs (€50 - €100).

The guy at the bottle shop said I should try Armagnac because it's got a bigger mouth feel to Cognac and it's generally cheaper in price (a €80 bottle of Armagnac is equivalent to a €150 bottle of Cognac).

Is this true? What are your experiences with the drink and brandy in general?

it's pretty good but man some of the flavor profiles can be weird. I've had a few 30+ year ones that tasted like potpourri and perfume. They use a hybrid still so the distillate usually has fewer congeners, but in exchange they're mostly single-vintage so there's more differentiation year to year

Anyone try this? Mesquite smoked single malt from Tucson, AZ. It's very enjoyable IMO, I'll take it over the average Glenlivet/Glenfiddich/Glenmorangie. They could still stand to crank up the smoke a couple of notches.

>>16283156
They're great but I prefer Cognac, just based on what I have tried so far. Armagnac seems to lean more towards raisiny and being more "rounded", where Cognac is livelier and brighter, with more interesting cask character. That could just be down to my limited experience with commonly available bottlings in the $30-$60 range. I do want to try some of the higher proof Armagnacs. Cognac above 40% ABV is much harder to find.

Sounds like the other bottle was the outlier.
Just open it, have a couple of drams, and then forget about it for a month. Peated whiskies always taste peatier when freshly opened.

Actually I find most whiskies change quite a bit when left open for months at a time, which is why you should try them at a pub; better to avoid whiskies that are only good when the bottle is freshly opened.

I hear the bottles have a bit of variation so its likely to be bad, ok or great. be easy with the cork(no wanking it side to side, only twist and pull simaltaneously) both bottles corks I've had have been weak. The bottle I've been sipping since October of last year is hasnt changed 1 iota. To me its always been raisin, yeast and wood, decent finish with some nuts, water(1-3 drops lukewarm) will bring out some lighter citrus notes or apple/pear and spices. It reminded me very much of Glengoyne 10 once it had been decanted for about a month. The mouthfeel isnt anything special, typical 43% inoffensive and light. there are many more worse ways to spend $45 on Scotch.

big time meme. I have the David Nicholson Reserve and being watered down to 50 abv it still drinks hotter than any cask strength Scotch I have(Uigeadail and Glenallechie 10) and like you said its got almost nothing outside the charred barrel and ethanol besides a fresh spun cotton candy like sweetness and on occassion a caramel candy corn note. I imagine its better in a cocktail than it is neat.

In my experience the first handful of pours are the best and then things tend to stagnate unless you put the bottle away for a couple months and then go back to it which leads to a transition that is either welcome or disappointing. Try proofing it down to 20-30% abv to see if it changes for the better.

This.

If you want a decent Canadian whisky go for Alberta Premium Cask Strength.

If unavailable in your area, Lot40 is a decent choice. Pentleton 1912 is good too and probably available in your area (bottled in the Seattle area I believe but soured in Canada)

Lastly you can also get the basic forty creek bottle (still better than club) but they've been getting rarer for some reason.

Canadian whiskey isn’t even whiskey in most cases. It’s a neutral rye grain alcohol with coloring and artificial flavoring (look it up I’m not lying, Canada has no laws protecting whiskey) so most “Canadian whiskeys” are actually not even whiskey in the traditional sense. hey burgerbros i've decided to get into bourbon

I kinda like the look of Blanton`s bottles and they seem to get good reviews, their memetic value is also off the charts
Should i pick the the gold edition or straight from the barrel (both are 100€)?
Or would you recommend something else entirely?

That's quite an order for someone starting out, but is otherwise pretty good.I can't really compare to good Scotch but you could give it a comparison test.

Blantons is well reviewed, likewise Wild Turkey Rare Breed. Four Roses is known be fruity and more floral, even for the single barrel which people do like more.

So in terms of type

There's barrel proof, which is from the barrel and have a higher abv, and have more developed taste. They also end up costing more. I haven't had a bad cask strength whiskey. So many brands have barrel proof versions, the one of sought out ones would be Elijah Craig's Barrel Proof. Stagg Jr would be another. Then comes many others which are well liked. Old Forester 1920, E.H.Taylor, Blantons, Bookers, Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof, etc...

Then there's rye whiskeys, which is a bit more spicy than regular corn whiskeys (bourbon, 51% requirement). Rye Whiskeys are the traditional form of American whiskey (comparable to other whiskeys around the world). Bulleit and Rittenhouse make the well known affordable ryes; Bulleit's pretty much the used in most mixed whiskey cocktails.

Then there's wheated bourbons which have a mashbill of 51% corn and usually 10-20% wheat instead of barley. This makes for a sweeter bourbon. There's 3 brands I know off the top of my head which make wheated bourbons: Weller (often sold out), Makers Mark (the most well known/popularized/cheapest), and Larcency.

Knob Creek makes great stuff. The older aged versions are well regarded

>Should i pick the the gold edition or straight from the barrel (both are 100€)?
There's only one regular bottle, the other two are about twice as rare.
Let me give you a advice I learned from working this liquor store for 3 years.
I've seen bottles come and go; most expensive, single-sale for more than 3 grand. More people ask for a range of about 5 rare kinds of bottles, 2/5 customers seeking real shit versus "rare" shit.
1/5 ask for something so 'unique' and scarce, that it doesn't even merit a response - like a Frank Sinatra Jack Daniels, or an 18 year Eagle Rare, maybe 20 year Kentucky Owl, whatever. You're not going to find the REAL rare shit unless there's a raffle going on.

This past year there's been skyrockets in stock market, mooning crypto, and stimulus checks from homeless to middle-class. These drunks have been drinking. The more they drink, the more reps are going to look at a liquor store's sales and 'decide' to give these stores a case, maybe a couple bottles, of something genuinely rare, every, single, week; for the past year.

Right now, there are raffles going on around the country. (Why?) Because Summer is coming to a close, and that's when major sales go from 1 to 3 and back to 1. If you want a rare bottle of bourbon you have about 5 choices.
>1. Raffles
>2. Get lucky
>3. Open a restaurant
>4. Buy online/trade
>5. Steal
I doubt you know what 'real' rarity is. And that's okay. You won't know unless you make your way into a bourbon society and stick it for at least a year, or work a liquor store somewhere near or in Kentucky, maybe work for a whisky distiller. So, if my opinion is worth a shit? I've seen entire cases of Henry McKenna 10yr Bottled-in-Bond come through my city - and I've seen about 1 case in 3 years of regular, Henry McKenna Sour Mash at a quarter of the price - and like every rare bottle of bourbon today in league with things like Blanton's and Pappy, it's what doesn't sell today, that's worth a fortune tomorrow.

Jesus Christ, Wild Turkey 101? Who are you trying to impress, trailer park high school kids? Old Forester? first sips with the old man... its good but hes totally disinterested so I'll have to pour it next some Jameson later to get his attention. does down like water and you can really distinguish the bourbon and olorosso when nosing. the bourbon character is really peanut and caramel heavy and the sherry is plenty rich and fruity. the malt is there, but very light on the empty glass, I can occassionally get orange and coffee notes. Surprisingly very little vanilla, but also very distant spice like cinnamon or clove.

Store is getting too up there own ass though selling shit like Suntory Toki for $40, Old Forester 86 Proof for near $30 and Glenfiddich 12 for $55. Like what the fuck dude?

Don't get me wrong, I love scotch and other whiskeys: Lagavulin 16 is my personal favourite scotch and if you're looking for something a bit sweeter in the Irish whiskey, Tullamore Dew XO Rum Cask is amazing.

Pic related at $35 when your average name brand spirit is ~$24 (lmaotaxes) is bretty gud. I don't buy malt whisky because it's just not worth it to drink more than rarely.

Buy Alberta Premium if you want 100% rye it's decent and in the same price bracket, it's the best whisky I've ever found in that price bracket. I would take regular club over both royal and club 100% rye because it costs less and the other two aren't good.

Buffalo trace is for friends. I can find it for $25 in my area.

Alright, as far as Islay scotches, I've had Laphroaig 10, Laphroaig Quarter Cask, and Ardbeg 10.

They also seem to care more about vintages rather than making blends. As for how I'd be able to walk into a store and see a bottle of Armagnac, how would i tell it's great? Frankly I wouldn't have a damn clue unless I tried the brand before and a close vintage. Only thing is that like I said, you can get like a 30 year old vintage for sometimes under 100 bucks simply cause no one cares about Armagnac so no demand.
