Just limit your sugar until you need none. Then just have it with less milk and soon enough you will just be able to leap into black or expresso. I don't drink it regularly but I enjoy it on occasion, however I never drink coffee with sugar, and I think the fact that milk-coffee drinkers get shamed more than sugar in black coffee drinkers, as if adding sugar in coffee doesn't matter at all!

Drinking it black is definitely a meme if you're just using some gas station type folgers dark roast or some shit. I've been getting some light roast haitian coffee and figuring out the water ratios and it honestly has a sweetness to it all of it's own. They weren't kidding about developing your palate or whatever the fuck. This goes double if you cold brew, legit tastes like I put a bunch of sugar/honey in it
