One day per year (Black Tot Day), my local rum bar (which is amazing, they have like 400-500 bottles) serves discounted Black Tot. I was able to get it for like $40 per ounce. Expensive, but you're drinking a piece of history, and there are rums blended in that are 70, 80, maybe 90 years old. The youngest rum in the blend would be at least 50 years old. And it tasted really really good.

For white rum I prefer Don Q to just about anything.
For a dark rum mixer black seal.
Flavored depends:
Plantation is good pineapple mixes ok
Kraken is what captain Morgan should be, Its very sweet but it has vanilla tones make it a good mixer.

For "Sipping Rums":
McCoy older is smoother
Pusser's is good for people who like whiskey (its has an oaky taste).

I would say that my personal least favorite rum is Captain Morgan. I would remove it from the world if I could. Its like fireball but somehow worse at being interesting. Bacardi is also very bland and its only good because cheep. Buy Don Q if you are getting a white rum if you are getting a dark rum get anything other then Bacardi.

these bottles have a unique anti-theft cap attached to the neck, ostensibly to stop people from stealing the contents. in reality, its to to stop the bottles from being reused.

i didnt understand how these bottle caps worked when i first bought one of these, i thought they had to be removed. so i jammed a knife in some of the plastic struts keeping it in place. then i realised i didnt have anything to plug it back up again and had to use a piece of cardboard fastened to the hole with a cut up piece of shirt and parcel string, like a jar of fruit preserves. i eventually transported it all into an old bottle of jameson

this is basically my goto rum for daiquiris and general mixes. Makes an amazing rum negroni with a few infusions.

Try this

Pineapple infused Havana club 7, strawberry infused campari, dolin sweet vermouth, classic negroni 1-1-1 spec stirred over ice and served on the rocks.

alternatively if you dont want to wait 2 weeks for a good infusion. you could just muddle fresh pineapple and strawberry in this and shake it. Up to you really, different presentation and mouthfeel.

Experimenting with some of the easier Tiki stuff, I've found that the whole thing of 10 ingredients for a Tiki drink can be compartimentalized and then used to generate simpler drinks. I think the biggest example is the Donn Day Afternoon (thanks, Martin Cate), which is basically the world's easiest Tiki cocktail (4 oz Grapefruit Radler, 2 oz rhum agricole blanc or really any rum, it changes the flavor profile and you get interesting results, 1/2 oz cinnamon syrup and 1/2 oz lime juice) and really abuses the flavor profile that classic flavor profile of cinnamon+lime+grapefruit that is so characteristic of Donn's drinks without requiring 10 ingredients.

There's a bunch of them that show up time and again (orange-lime-passion fruit and orange-lemon-passion fruit are classics, apricot liqueur and lime pair stupid well, etc), I wonder how much you can compartimentalize and make a Random Tiki Drink Generator.

It's literally 4, rum, lime juice, cinnamon syrup, and a grapefruit radler. And ice but I'm not sure if you count that as an ingredient. If you're deliberately obtuse, it's 5 (grapefruit juice and a wheat beer rather than a radler). Cinnamon syrup is premade, you don't count sugar and water in a whiskey sour, just syrup.

Bacardi black actually makes the best hot toddy's. Use 2-3oz, 2-3 tsp turbinado sugar, and one dash of angostura, then fill the mug with hot water from the kettle. I prefer no citrus peel, but if you must í would recommend lemon or orange.

I just dont understand what the appeal of this scotch is, it's got such a god damned weird taste profile that when it's in your mouth it just feels like having a heavy liquid that tastes almost of fucking nothing, the only flavor you get is after the swallow, which i will admit is at least somewhat pleasant, lasts for only a moment. I've never had a scotch that had such a incredible lack of flavor.

>> No.16250181

>>16250026
Low intensity 12 year old scotch is for people trying to get into scotch by drinking things progressively more expensive (which is dumb because you get non stop good excuses to quit before spending adequate money). It doesn't take long after that point though, before those people start demanding higher abv / peat / sherry finishes.
Quite frankly lack of intensity is a flaw. You overlook it sometimes when the complexity is there, but generally you'll favor something that you didn't have to take an antihistamine and fast during the flu off season to appreciate whatsoever.
