What is the best whiskey the layman can buy (in other words, not spending $50+ on a bottle)

Evan Williams and Maker's Mark are both pretty good and cheap. Jack Daniels is pee pee for sorority girls, don't buy it. $50+ for a bottle of bourbon is pretty expensive by the way. A lot of people think that more $ = better taste 100% of the time but those people are underage novices who haven't drank enough to spot good liquor that's also cheap.

Basically this >>16199452

Apart from being produced in smaller batches and being stored longer, marketing plays the biggest role. Whiskeys you've heard a lot about pay lots of money for that exposure and it factors into the price like with any consumer good. With vodka however, marketing is 100% the reason for the price because it's literally the easiest liquor to distill on an industrial scale. Paying more than $20 for a fifth of vodka is just plain retarded unless your goal is to flex on a bitch.

>> No.16206942

>>16206813
Because bigger number = more perceived value.
It costs them in the realm of cents per year to age a bottle whisky. Almost none of the cost comes from warehouse rent.
Evaporation over time slows down considerably. A 25 year old cask strength whisky has about 52% abv, and 12 year old cask strengths have a little over 55% abv (justifying a 5% price difference).
Time to bring to market matters for new distilleries who have trouble selling anything until they have aged stock. But if they sell gin, or NAS whisky (not in Scotland) or unaged grain spirit to other distilleries and manage to stay afloat, then it's about yearly sales figures from then on.

>> No.16206945

>>16208130
I think the Lassanta has the more influential finish. With the QR you are getting some of the woodiness coming through and the Port is less sweet / darker fruits than the Sherry.
I had a bunch of friends try them side by side and everyone but one person had trouble picking a favorite. I think I slightly prefer the Lassanta even though the two extra years of the QR has done it favors.

Have you tried older Glenfarclas? they're relatively cheap, but I was very disappointed with the 12.
Have you tried older Aberlour? I haven't seen any on the shelves, but their cask strength stuff is great. Way better than their 12 year old, but iirc they've changed it like 3 times since I last had it.

The 17 farclas is my favorite, although the 21 and 25 are pretty good if you want a big, spicy bowl of fall potpourri like you're walking into a furniture store. Admittedly I haven't had the 10 or 12 in a while, but the 10 CS is amazing.

The A'bunadh is probably my favorite sherry bomb but the price keeps ticking up. The age statements are a bit less over-the-top and a bit more fruity but the whole range is good.
