Nihonshu (colloquially, sake).

I live Japan, so I have plenty of great stuff to choose from, and much of it is relatively inexpensive. Recently my go to is Ichinokura super dry (pic related).

Barring that, I'll drink malbec, shiraz, or any other spicy red wine. If I'm out and everyone is drinking cocktails then a Cuba Libre (rum n coke with lime). I quit drinking beer when I moved to Japan, since basic lager is about all you can find here and most of it is pretty crappy.

If you want to create a beautiful "community", forum software is not for you. You should rather find some way to securely verify people's identities and then talk with them on a first-name basis. Once you start allowing pseudonyms, anything goes.

On the other hand, you're interested in starting a forum on some topic of your interest, and allowing anyone to post, then 2ch-type is infinitely better than PhpBB, Invision, or vBulletin. I'm going to refer to these as "old-type forum software"; I'm not pretending to be unbiased.

Here's why:

Registration keeps out good posters. Imagine someone with an involving job related to your forum comes across it. This person is an expert in her field, and therefore would be a great source of knowledge for your forum; but if a registration, complete with e-mail and password, is necessary before posting, she might just give up on posting and do something more important. People with lives will tend to ignore forums with a registration process.
Registration lets in bad posters. On the other hand, people with no lives will thrive on your forum. Children and Internet addicts tend to have free time to go register an account and check their e-mail for the confirmation message. They will generally make your forum a waste of bandwidth.
Registration attracts trolls. If someone is interested in destroying a forum, a registration process only adds to the excitement of a challenge. One might argue that a lack of registration will just let "anyone" post, but in reality anyone can post on old-type forum software; registration is merely a useless hassle. Quoting a 4channeler:

Trolls are not out to protect their own reputation. They seek to destroy other peoples' "reputation" ... Fora with only registered accounts are like a garden full of flowers of vanity a troll would just love to pick.

>> No.16175133

>>16175120
Trolls are not out to protect their own reputation. They seek to destroy other peoples' "reputation" ... Fora with only registered accounts are like a garden full of flowers of vanity a troll would just love to pick.

Anonymity counters vanity. On a forum where registration is required, or even where people give themselves names, a clique is developed of the elite users, and posts deal as much with who you are as what you are posting. On an anonymous forum, if you can't tell who posts what, logic will overrule vanity. As Hiroyuki, the administrator of 2ch, writes:
If there is a user ID attached to a user, a discussion tends to become a criticizing game. On the other hand, under the anonymous system, even though your opinion/information is criticized, you don't know with whom to be upset. Also with a user ID, those who participate in the site for a long time tend to have authority, and it becomes difficult for a user to disagree with them. Under a perfectly anonymous system, you can say, "it's boring," if it is actually boring. All information is treated equally; only an accurate argument will work.

tl;dr lurk more or fuck off.

After years of abusing alcohol (drinking till very drunk and going to sleep almost every day), I can't drink just 1 drink and be happy. When I used to drink, I'd turn down people's offers to go for "a beer". I'd go with them but I'd drink water because having 1 beer was worse than having nothing at all, because I would instantly crave more. I'd only drink when going out when I knew the other person was after drinking for the evening like I was.
I have quit drinking for several months in a row a few times over the last few years. It gets boring around the 4 month mark, so I try to drink again, in moderation. But it just doesn't work, the same thing happens. I'd get a 6 pack and plan to only have a couple. I would drink 1 can pretty slowly, but then I'd end up chugging the second. After that point, I no longer care about moderation, so I drink all 6 within a couple of hours, plus whatever else I can find. The only solution to this is to only buy small quantities of alcohol at a time, but what's even the point? I'm gonna go to the liquor store every day and only buy a couple of cans? Seems retarded. Might as well just not drink at all.

A blended peated malt or a blended malt in general?
For the former, it punches way above it's weight for its price. It's better than Ledaig because it covers up some of its flaws, but is worse than Ardbeg imo.
As for compared to a blended malt in general, it does not lack intensity as most seem to.
The peat monster is much better though, for about $15 more. It tastes most like Benromach Peat Smoke imo, which makes sense since it's peat + speyside vs peated speyside. I didn't have it close to Machir Bay, but I don't recall them being similar.

Not that that was a list of personal recommendations. Some of those are worse than Lagavulin, and some I haven't had any luck with at all.

About like a typical speyside with a blast of nutty sherry. It's been a while since I poured any. My store has another Ben Nevis bottle I might pick up sometime. I'm not a "collector" but I'm less likely to drink something if I don't have a bottle of something similar to replace it with. Talisker is my #1 but I swear it doesn't taste like it did years ago

Redbreast is absolutely delicious. I haven't tried many other Irish, except for loads of Jameson, and I really enjoyed Teeling Single Grain. It had a cowboy kick and it tasted a little young but I liked it. Banana note similar to Jack Daniels. It had an amaretto note I couldn't get enough of

it's pretty good for the cask strength, lots of nutty spice, less of that molasses syrup that eagle rare/ buffalo trace has

the regular single barrel is fine, a bit perfumey and not worth the same amount as the cask strength for the same money

if you haven't tried it yet, the john j bowmans are the same mashbill as the regular buffalo trace but can be found everywhere

No spirit is "good for mixing." That's just a marketing phrase meaning "bad for sipping."
You can get away with a much worse spirit for mixing, which is a good cost saving measure. But don't be convinced that better rum, and coke, won't make a better rum and coke.
If you try to go for one bottle you'll get a barely palatable sipping experience and a better than it needs to be mixer. And for the same price as two bottles of mid-low tier trash you could have bought a proportionally cheaper and more expensive bottle.
It's not like spirits are perishable.

There's always a wine thread going.
The reason why the scotch threads go so well is that anything that you have drank I've drank / heard of / can't afford. There's enough shared experience for actual discussion.
Wine discussion goes like this:
Have you tried X?
Never heard of it, but Y is great, try Y.
Neither X or Y get tried because they were hard to track down and random anons opinion is worse than the guy in the store who has definitely drank something you can obtain.

Speaking of unobtanium. I recently sent a friend to England to by a Starward (Melbourne) whisky that I can't get here, even at the distillery. This is so much more common in wine, but has added price variation too.

It has a cooler bottle than the cheaper brands, big cork is kind of neat. Reminds me of old bottle designs so would definitely recommend buying it, pour the rum out, rinse out with soap and use it as a decoration, flower vase or put some nice rum in it and pretend to be a pirate and drink straight from the bottle. They're still cheap. What distilleries are bringing you aged stock cheaper than Clynleish/Oban 14, Dalwhinnie 15 or Lagavulin 16?
Best I've come across is Glen Moray 15 which is proportionally worse, or the Quinta Ruben 14 when its on sale.
If anything they're bringing prices down through competition, and if you actually believe in the inherit quality of 46% no color non chill filtered then they should be easy to beat.
