I place this blame on the sandwich maker not the sandwich itself. You can't just take big ole meatballs and slap them on a stiffer/toasted french bread, like OP's pic.

Sometimes you gotta slice them in half or quarters to fill in the gaps between balls and fit weird spots for a whole meatball. You also have to make sure you are using a softer italian bread with enough width and depth to handle the contours of the meatballs. Then you toast the outside of the sub, not interior.

Time and time again I see people violate these rules, like Josh Wiesman or however the fuck you spell it. I don't want giant meatballs that squish off hard crusty bread that will cut up your mouth, that's just bad sandwich construction.
