its not pretentious. its to help jog your memory when tasting something that CAN taste LIKE some of the descriptors. its not the same as having a mouthfull of honey and KNOWING its honey that you are tasting as you may only get a vague bint of it and for a small snippet of time. Vanilla can be confusing because so many things have vanilla in them which can make you think you are tasting one of those due to the vanilla note. The ability to dissect something that has no guaranteed limit of flavors is part of the game.

>> No.16146718

Let me just start by saying I have a very deadened palate. That is, I can handle the taste and texture of neat liquor. What I can’t handle is the aggressive smoky and peaty flavor of most scotch. I’ve tried top shelf and bottom shelf, the single ice cube with the drops of water, and they just don’t work for me. In my opinion bourbon is far superior barrel aged/smoky whiskey. Why does everybody pretend that a sour smoky scotch is the pinnacle of whiskey making? Now to the point, why is blended whiskey so derided in general?

>> No.16146747

All alcohol tastes terrible. I drink vodka cause it is the most efficient way to get me drunk.

>> No.16146759

>>16146718
>I [don't like] Scotch
That's fine. Bourbon's good too.
>sour, smoky Scotch
You can squeeze a lot of nuance out of it, or just completely fucking ruin it. It needs time on oak for sure.
>Blended whiskey
Mixing out faults is seen as cheating to those who (can/prefer others to) nail it in one go. Single-malt, single still, single cask/barrel whisk(e)y is hard to make with any sort of consistency, especially when you need multiple stills, barrels, and suppliers to meet demand, so a lot gets discarded or degraded in getting it right or close. When a product's been around long enough to have the kind of reputation that fetches a few hundred dollars a pint, dumping or selling off the off batches for blends isn't a huge loss.

>> No.16146788

>>16146759
Am I missing any broad flavor notes besides sour and smoky? What do you mean by nuance? Maybe woody, which isn’t a problem. Now to your other point, I can see the business sense of not blending down a sought after batch or brand of whiskey, but my issue is with the actual flavor of it rather than its popularity. I feel like these discussions always devolve into an argument about scarcity instead of the individual merits of the whiskey.

>> No.16146851

>>16146788
It's definitely more about scarcity, sometimes forced. A blend can taste every bit as good as a one-off. Some blends are blended to get as close as possible, consistently, to someone else's better batches (Suntory, looking in your direction here).

The nuances aren't broad - the only real broad flavours in scotch are ethanol, peat smoke, oak vanillin, and occasionally some really potent esters. Older scotch loses some of that ethanol sting and gives the oak more time to work its magic against some of the guaiacol and other phenols. The end result is less harsh, a bit sweeter, and there might be some esters in there hinting at stone fruit, butterscotch, honey, or molasses which will be more apparent.

>> No.16146888

>>16146851
Ah, I see what you mean. My next question then is how old is old enough in your opinion for the oak to do it’s job? I’ve had some scotch I liked before such as macallan 12 but it still didn’t hit like a good mid level bourbon like Makers. Seems like the scarcity component leaves us with really expensive food scotches and an abundance of poor quality cheap to mid range, compared to other spirits.

>> No.16146909

I can't stand anything "smokey".

Tequila and Gin are my go to's. I like my drinks to feel refreshing. Margarita (2oz tequila, 1oz triple sec, 1 oz fresh squeeze like), or a very basic gin, club soda and lime

>> No.16147339

>>16146888
yeah, some of it's basically just for connoisseurs and collectors at this point. Some lighter scotches can get away with 12 years; 18's kind of the sweet spot. 20+ is usually too expensive for what it is, but I've never had one that's less than incredible. Because it needs to be aged for that long to tone it down, it's going to be double the price for something of similar quality - warehousing isn't free, and well-made barrels really aren't cheap. You have to figure that twice as much 7 year old rum can come out of the same barrel as 14 year old scotch. That Rum's going to be good, getting to the point of diminishing returns, and that Scotch is just starting to come into its own.

>> No.16147414

>>16147339
It’s funny that you mention rum because it’s my drink of choice, but I guess scotch isn’t for me if it’s that cost prohibitive to produce a truly incredible batch. I also see that it further boils down to scarcity as being the true metric for the value of scotch, which is a little frustrating. I still appreciate everything you’ve explained to me and hope I will get the chance to try a 20 year. But what you said about blends is what I like about them, I guess. I don’t see it cheating to cut the middleman out. Do you have any recommendations for me given what we’ve discussed?

>> No.16147620

>>16147414
It's not entirely a veblen issue, but... a lot of it is.

Jura's really good for the price. Walker Black's inoffensive and cheap. Laphroaig is pretty much off the table unless you're having a masochistic day. Suntory's Toki really reminds me of something else, but it's fairly smooth, lots of interesting esters and phenols that give it a little bit of a tang, and it's not any more expensive here than mid-level bourbon.

>>16147702
They did a thing, and did it well, and then dudes were dudes about it. Things and prices got out of hand. A really good scotch is like a really good steak - costs way more than it needs to, but a lot of care was put into making it, and sometimes you just have to drop a few hundred on poor choices to reap what these people have sown.

I hole-hardedly agree, but allow me to play doubles advocate here for a moment. For all intensive purposes I think you are wrong. In an age where false morals are a diamond dozen, true virtues are a blessing in the skies. We often put our false morality on a petal stool like a bunch of pre-Madonnas, but you all seem to be taking something very valuable for granite. So I ask of you to mustard up all the strength you can because it is a doggy dog world out there. Although there is some merit to what you are saying it seems like you have a huge ship on your shoulder. In your argument you seem to throw everything in but the kids Nsync, and even though you are having a feel day with this I am here to bring you back into reality. I have a sick sense when it comes to these types of things. It is almost spooky, because I cannot turn a blonde eye to these glaring flaws in your rhetoric. I have zero taller ants when it comes to people spouting out hate in the name of moral righteousness. You just need to remember what comes around is all around, and when supply and command fails you will be the first to go. Make my words, when you get down to brass stacks it doesn't take rocket appliances to get two birds stoned at once. It's clear who makes the pants in this relationship, and sometimes you just have to swallow your prize and accept the facts. You might have to come to this conclusion through denial and error but I swear on my mother's mating name that when you put the petal to the medal you will pass with flying carpets like it’s a peach of cake.

Real issue is your need to have a taste for it already for the subtle little flavors to come through, you basically need to desensitize yourself to the base flavor to notice the others because of how strong the alcohol taste is. It's why the flavors are immediately noticable to the people to make it and people who consume it regularly. Beer works a bit like this too but isn't as overpowering of a flavor as a baseline.

That said the forced manliness aura around whiskey is pretty funny though, more women drink it than men because it's lower in kcals and makes them 'not like the other girls'. Most of the men I know who drink it as their go to are very performative in their masculinity, it's a similar thought process to men who don't drink wine because it's associated with women for whatever reason.

There are only 2 Beams I like and it's their black and double oaked. The rest burn too much. As for Scotch. You can absolutely pick up on the differences in region (especially something like Isley and Spayside) but other than that a lot of them will have very similar taste profiles. I never let the hipsters ruin what I like because eventually they WILL stumble upon your drink/food/pastime of choice.
