I have two versions, a sweet and a savoury.
SWEET: Made with milk, pinch of salt, cinnamon, strawberries, blueberries, dash of cayenne, tablespoon or two of maple syrup.
SAVOURY: Made with chicken stock, four or five dried jalapenos (crushed but not too fine), three or four good dashes of cayenne, onion and garlic powder, dash of garlic salt, any type of fowl (shredded), sometimes an egg (fried or poached in the oatmeal for the last 45 seconds on the stove).

If you have time to spare cook pearl barley with spiced water (cinnamon/cloves) then finish it up with milk+sugar+evaporated milk+dried fruit (raisins, etc...). Added too much of my homemade dried acerolas so it turned out too acidic, but sweetening it more than usual did the trick. A tiny bit of cayenne also seemed to distract from the acidity. Too bad it took probably close to an hour or more to get the barley to a softer state as opposed to very chewy.
