I managed to smile and nod my way through the bullshit of university to become a teacher. One of my favorite topics of conversation in class is to ask students if they feel like school is teaching them real things they need to know in life, and if not, what would actually be useful, and would they want to learn that?
Then I literally stop whatever other unit we're on and teach them the shit they literally want to learn, like how to make a fire (even without tools), how to identify edible things in the wild, basic cooking and a balanced meal, how to do their taxes, how to be good at interviews, and other real shit.
I end up having to flex my interpretational skills to make connections to some required curricular outcomes (it lines up best with social studies usually) in order to actually grade the students (so that I can "prove" I'm teaching what the government wants, and thus keep my job), but it's fucking worth it to actually teach them useful shit and know you've helped them at least a little.
