supposedly makes everything taste amazing. kinda like how salt brings out flavors, msg enhances flavor in a different way, supposedly with no downside, which I'm skeptical about. Nothing comes for free desu

>> No.16115435

>>16115419
There certainly is downsides, the "umami" flavor really doesn't belong in all food, there's times where its useful and times where it shouldn't be there, just like any other seasoning. It definitely isn't like salt.

It has sodium. If you’re working on your 3rd heart attack, you should probably avoid it same as salt.

I've heard this meme many times but at least to me, it literally tastes umami. A finger pop of it tastes like you just ate a Dorito or some other MSG covered snack food. It absolutely adds umami to a dish, but obviously if there's already umami then it will make it more strong.

It has sodium, but less sodium relative to table salt of equivalent volume. Some institutions recommend no more than 10g per 1kg of food, which frankly is already more saturated than you'd want so there's no risk

It makes food taste better.
Only downside is that it makes shit taste so good thar you get addicted to it and thus get addicted to an amerilard diet and end up living and then gracelessly expiring like an amerilard.
MSG itself is harmless. You can chug a spoonful everyday and all you'll feel is a dry throat. Chugging a spoonful of sugar erryday will make you fat(ter) and chugging spoonfuls of salt will wreck your electrolyte balance and body's water retention.
But MSG doesn't make you fat by itself and is basically just a seaweed extract so it doesn't fuck you up like salt overdose.

All research indicates that people who believe they have "chinese restaurant syndrome" don't actually, it's just a placebo effect because they got told stories about MSG and/or there are other factors that cause the negative reaction like the oversaturation of salt and sugar.

People who have actual legitimate negative reactions to free glutamates are such a statistically insignificant minority that the dietary restrictions they have to enforce on themselves do not apply to the general population. Peanuts aren't banned because some people have peanut allergies.

>msg has its own taste, just as salt has its own taste.
Yes, every chemical compound has a taste.
But salt tastes like salt. If you add salt to something, it adds saltiness. Salt makes other things taste salty.
Tasting msg on its own doesn’t taste like much. It most certainly doesn’t taste like a flavor it directly adds to things. Adding msg to things doesn’t add msgness. Msg doesn’t make other things taste msg-ey. If you taste a food or sauce, and claim you can ‘taste’ the msg, the cook either added way too much, or you’re being less than honest.

No, MSG does have a distinct taste. I can taste the MSG salt on its own and recognise that same flavor in dishes that I've added it to.
