What the redditors don't understand because they've never visited any part of these towns but the part in the pics is that "by the highway" is an area of these highway towns, not the whole thing and often not even the center. People don't live in this little strip where the Arby's and McDs are and the town hall, locally popular restaurants, and hangout places aren't there either. Townies will eat at "the McDonalds by the highway" or grab gas there on their way back from work, but their house is on a big, rural piece of land or in a little strip of houses nowhere near this shit. Nor do they even normally go to that part of town other than to occasionally grab fast food.
