Cuisine wise, why is fast food like Mcdonald's seen as luxury and high quality places for dining in Asia and Western Europe? Is it the lack of standards and culture in these areas in regards to food, or is the more in the sense of these areas having less purchasing power?

They feel American to foreigners, and if it feels fancy, it would be the overpriced fast food prices even higher in a foreign country.

For tourists, fast food is like stepping into their own country for a moment to guarantee a bathroom break. There will places in the world that charge for bathrooms, geesh, but in a fast food restaurant, it'll be free with purchase. Fast food is also known to have potable water used in the ice going into drinks, so no upset tummies.

How do you figure?
Never been to Western Europe, but McDonald’s in Japan is seen as McDonald’s.
Yeah it’s held in higher regard than McDonald’s in the US, but that’s because McDonald’s in Japan is like walking into a prop-McDonald’s used for filming commercials; typically the restaurant is spotlessly immaculate, the staff aren’t a bunch of stoner retards, orders are correctly prepared, and the service is actually good.
Pic is the McD’s in Shin-Osaka station; good if you’re catching an early train because most restaurants in the station aren’t open that early.

In Bruges is really just a slice of how Europeans view vacationing Americans in vacation spots. I wouldn't say that provides a sufficient picture. I wouldn't say the US is "prestigious", especially not now, but there's a nugget of underlying truth in it. The US in the 20th century was seen as extremely, flamboyantly affluent and their movies, tv, music, and most media is still the most heavily exported of any country's. For that reason among English speaking artists the US is the most prestigious place you can ply your trade as it is for many other avenues of business. See older media such as Supertramp's "Breakfast in America" for a tongue in cheek look at the US reputation of affluence in the 20th century.

Right, what I should have made a bigger issue of was the difference between views of "Americans" and "America" which is what I meant to get at more. Americans are loud and obnoxious and arrogant (they'll tell you that, they like that reputation). But America itself has "prestige" under a narrow definition in that it's kind of the "Show" or "Big Leagues" for a lot of different pursuits due to population and purchasing power. Listen to how many British comedians and bands talk about "breaking America" for instance. I'm really starting to appreciate this thread. Let's recap: Europeans thought someone saying you can't sell cheesecake or you're fancy (that case in France is literally exactly like what American cafeterias in hospitals and theme parks look like), or have clean looking spaces in nice buildings (literally every major American city has Macca's that look like that), and then just answered with his original statement to every challenge was totally not trolling. Then they turned their bait-taking into a discussion on how Americans were stupid and can't banter.
It's honestly kind of beautiful.

my fucking sides, the cope in this thread is unreal. so many americans have never seen a genuine, good looking building that it's pretty embarassing. you should try to visit vienna, budapest, paris, rome, or london and try to wrap yourself around the idea that people actually LIVE here, europe is not a meme. if mcdonald's wants to turn a profit they have to be where tons of people pass by (hint: historic city centers with shitloads of tourists). pic related: i used to live close to this mcdonald's in strasbourg. the whole fucking city center is UNESCO classified. if they want to be here, we're not going to bulldoze a historic building with centuries of history so they can buy a shitty box looking hangar. maybe our mcdonald's food seems better than yours, but i can guarantee you that no one will ever look at it as "classy" food. it's at the same level as pizza, kebab or fried chicken restaurants: disgusting low tier junk food, but people eat it so it's there. i'm living in paris and only lower class people are not ashamed to be seen eating this garbage here.
thanks for the laughs.

I don't know if this thread is a pretty funny troll on Euros or a ploy from a McDonalds ad exec to have people talk about their nice new buildings, but the whole premise of this thread is ridiculous. There are McDonalds that look as nice as or even extremely similar to pretty much every "fancy" example in this thread in every major city in the US. City McDonalds and city fast food in general tend to have nice buildings in their flagship, downtown locations in major cities. Y'all are lost in the weeds talking about why Europe has nicer looking McDick's and you don't even realize the whole premise is false.

Keep in mind what's shown in this thread are promo images and most of them are really just "nice" not exactly fancy and expensive. But there's a lot I can think of that are comparable and I looked some more up. So: Hyde Park in NY is quite nice (picrel), Boston has a pretty decent one in an older building on Washington and even the Chinatown one looks decent from the outside, Chicago has the flagship McDick's and it's obviously very fancy, I'm not spending all day on this and there's not even a lot of good examples for Euro one's in this thread. I'm literally googling (city) McDonald's and I can see some every time that look "luxury" compared to your highway-side McDs. In older American cities like Boston, Philly, and New York there's even some in historic looking buildings like people are arguing about.

But Riga's still the main city in its country. Its downtown still has fancy architecture that McDs either rents from or has to build to fit in with. I'm saying I think OP is trolling all of you by bringing up examples like that of a downtown McDonalds in a nice part of town and comparing it to your idea of American McDs because you stopped at one of our 14000+ locations that aren't in the downtown of a big city. My argument was that American McDonalds in our downtowns do the same thing as the European ones in their cities and try to fit in with the somewhat fancy architecture that surrounds it. I wasn't really looking to get into an architectural argument or worried about HOW nice the McDs look subjectively. There's no doubt that Chicago McDs is meant to look luxurious even if it does look soulless and corporate, that's just what Chicago's downtown looks like in some places.

All I'm really saying is OP is playing off a function of the number of locations in the US vs. individual European countries. The US has five times the PER CAPITA Mcdonalds of Latvia despite having some 60 or whatever times the total population. We put our McDs everywhere. Latvia and really the rest of Europe other than maybe the UK tend to have the McDonalds in their main population centers and maybe a smattering elsewhere. Main population centers have nice buildings in their downtowns so McDonalds has nice buildings in downtown locations. It won't look exactly the same in the US as Europe since US cities are generally newer and follow different architectural trends but it's definitely still "fancier" than the thousands of locations that the US and Canada have in podunk highway towns all over the place.

In China the first few KFCs were established right before the country opened up and had deep connections with the government/tourist bureaus. Hence why they were able to procure nice/luxurious storefronts and were seen as a symbol of status.
Nowadays though it's a very different beast. I'll xpost from /int/
>KFC became popular in China since it was the first big fastfood player to come in. However it stayed popular by literally becoming a "local" fast food chain.
>It offered rice congee, rice ball/roll, youtiao (chinese churro), chuan'r, Sichuan-style offal and whatnots.

Asia and Western Europe has a street food culture, people can buy good cheap food from locals making their specialties at dirt cheap prices.

Americans dont really have a street food culture due to how vast their country is and that's even depending on where you live as well. Mcdonalds and fast food is dirt cheap and the equivalent of the cheap street food you find in other countries. When Mcdonalds expanded to those countries, they really couldnt compete with the vast variety of cheap high quality foods you find in asia and europe and chose to target a different market by aiming for a more upscale higher quality crowd through the novelty of their burgers and other american style foods that you dont really find in those other countries.

Christ at least we only shove a Starbucks and a McDonald's into new buildings

>as if industrial revolution didn't happen in other countries
Yeah, but most of those countries were able to retain their peasant cuisine through it, we didn't and for many years working class food had such delights as Dripping on Toast.

Only poor people and families with children eat at McDonalds in Europe.

Regular people would rather see the chain banned.

McDonald’s used to only have these goofy looking buildings, but ever since the 80’s they’ve been occasionally making fancy restaurants, usually to mark some kind of milestone for their company. Stores like these can be found all over the US as well.

Everyone in the world still subconsciously clings to 1950s America. Hard not to - it was the most prosperous era in modern history for average people. However, that admiration today is just a lingering habbit. People still have that subconscious admiration even though consciously they understand America isn't even a shell of its former self.

I have had two different full time jobs in Sweden. Employers have to beg you to stay overtime and even then, you make a lot of money so a lot of workers try to stay overtime, most can't since it costs the company too much.
A worker didn't take his vacation so the bosses had a talk with him and pretty much forced him to take a month off during the summers, paid.
And that was a shitty company..
