Are hydrometers a meme?

I only ever see them in the context of hipster grognard homebrewing. All they measure is "specific gravity" which isn't even a real term and is just density compared to clean water.

Why don't I just use a 20$ scale instead of these 1000$ pieces of shit that don't even give a real reading of any actual hard measurement?

Actually they are about $10, they’re incredibly convenient, and you’re a moron.

What? They're like $10. Also they're useful because they can tell you if fermentation went to completion, or if the yeast died.

The only one I've seen that cheap was at a thrift shop.

And what do they tell you that a weighing doesn't? "Specific Gravity" is just density for hipsters. (or if you take offense to that because you are a beardo soylad, all specific gravity is is density as compared to water)

If you want to be an autistic retard better make sure that graduated cylinder is quantitative, maybe get the metrology department to do a PV every time you make a batch just to make sure what you're measuring out is actually the volume advertised on the side of the vessel.

>> No.16106865

>>16106848
You're thicker than the OP, that's pretty impressive.
As he says, these things just measure relative density. You can do that with a scale if you know the volume and the mass of your vessel.
Obviously, a cheap handheld tool is significantly more convenient than keeping track of your vessel's weight, volumetric contents, and hauling your keg onto a scale now and then.

A hydrometer costs 2 dollars and measures original gravity and specific gravity. Using that you can calculate the alcohol percent you are trying to make.
For original gravity a hydrometer has mostly been replaced by a refractometer. But a refractometer can't measure anything once fementation has started so you still need a hydrometer for your final gravity reading.

Yep, a refractometer was the dumbest purchase I made for brewing. You still need a hydrometer for FG, so you may as well use the hydrometer from the get-go. Plus the refractometer needs to be calibrated every time you use it.

much like a hydrometer, you have to operate on a lot of >inferences
and in real industry factory producing beer/cider/wine/etc they're used more to gauge literal clarity and use that info to then gauge how well it's being filtered, not the alcohol content
