The reason it's suggested to not use soap is because Traditionally, soap is very alkaline, because of how it's made. This PH is bad for the seasoning specifically. So modern "soft on hands" soaps like dawn and shit are a more neutral PH and is much less stressful on the seasoning. I use soap on my cast irons too sometimes.
