Exactly, it is bullshit to suggest that people who make food are artists. Thus, bakeries who sell wedding cakes are obliged to sell such cakes (custom or otherwise) to gay couples, or to not sell wedding cakes in the first place if they have some objection to non-discriminatory selling of whatever goods they proffer to customers.

You are not an artist, you sell food. If you hate gay people because you are a bigot, don't hide behind religious hostility as a shield. Admit that you personally hate gay people, and nobody is forcing your hand on such matters.

This dude supposedly won in court, but look, he doesn't sell wedding cakes anymore, which supposedly were like 70% of his business, because he refuses to sell them to gay couples, which is federally unlawful sex discrimination.

Nobody says you have to bake wedding cakes for gay couples, they are saying you cannot sell wedding cakes if you refuse to provide them to gay couples.

Art is creation; if anything the commissioner of the piece is the artist, as they decide which type of "bread", which flavors of processed meat, any cheese, toasted or not, and which wilted vegetables and outdated sauces should be combined.
Subway staff just pile it together and wrap it in wax paper before they try to sell you a cookie.

I'm not sure about surrogacy by itself, but when you add up children from prior heterosexual relationships, adoption, and surrogacy, about 20% of gay couples are raising kids:
