Sarma is just the name for cabbage rolls in the Balkans, but cabbage rolls are cooked differently depending on the region.

The Russians bake them like fucking neanderthals, but patrician Slavs will boil them in water and tomato paste, and when they're half done will add some zafrig (a roux with onion and paprika) to thicken the water so the meal is both the cabbage roll and a thick, hearty soup.

It is the ultimate winter meal. Plus, I don't know about the Russians, but when I make the actual rolls I put in a generous amount of vegeta,

i like making turkey minced meat in chilis it's really easy to make and doesn't go bad and never tastes different if i use different meat.

i don't use these for meatballs i think you are suppsoed to put it thru a grinder and season it thru the grinder for sausages but don't put it in casing just roll the meats into a ball.

you can always make pasta with it, it's really easy:
1 can of diced or whole tomatoes
1 can of tomato paste you can use half of it if you want
1 seasoning packet (italian seasoning with no msg)
onion (powder form if none on hand)
garlic (powder form if none on hand)
vegetable oil
bay leaves (can leave out if you want but remove after)
cumin
salt
paprika or cayenne (can leave out if you want)

heat pan, add oil and wait until hot, put onions until semi opaque, add garlic, add salt, add meat, add seasoning, wait until meat is thoroughly cooked, put in tomatoes and tomato paste and all the juices from the can, add water if there is not enough liquid for sauce (some people like to use water used to boil their pasta noodles) and then add bay leaves. let it boil for like 20 or 30 minutes, stirring occasionally so the meat doesn't stick to the bottom of the pan, lower heat to low.

if you want to cook instant pasta buy dry pasta, add water and put salt in it less than a tbsp and then put the pasta amount then wait until it is all soggy and soft.

serve sauce over pasta. if you want you can boil the sauce longer after addding cooked noodles.

From frozen, I rotate between a few favorites outside of tacos, chili, or sloppy joes.

Cuban picadillo, is onions, garlic, peppers, wine, olive, raisin or date, bay, tomato paste, chicken stock just rich and just so luscious with some valencia pearl rice just soaking up the sweet, savory and piquant olive bite. Softened up by some sweet plantains on the side, which you can easily buy frozen nowadays, vs waiting for perfect ripeness. Leftovers are great reheated from the freezer.

Dirty rice, from scratch, just so satisfying. with or without liver, still good. Has to have lots of fresh parsley, and hot sauce on the side. Always have some french bread with it, for some reason.
