Is is true that when Americans and British invaded Afghanistan, they were blown away by how good Afghan food is? What do Afghans eat?

If I had to guess I'd say they probably eat meat on a stick and some kind of rice dish. They probably feel very strongly about the fact that their meat on a stick and rice dish is completely different than the neighboring countries meat on a stick and rice dish. I'm sure it's really good though

You can absolutely sell a lamb burger with mint chimichurri and labneh in the US, but you can't just put cheeseburger on your menu, because there are specific expectations of what a cheeseburger is. Oh, who knows what crap they ate for the first time ever as a kid in the military with zero life experiences. Take the ooh and ahh with a grain of salt, because only high ranking officials were eating offbase whatsoever, but enjoying only their own canteen on base, FACT. There were no americans wandering streets eating out in town, like ever. Too dangerous, and there were tons of problems with security.

But, I used to eat in Rosslyn VA at a great tasting afghani restaurant near Courthouse metro that was called nothing more than kebob house or some neutral name, but they had delicious eggplant stew and spinach stew, just utterly oozing in soft peppers and herbs, just perfectly cooked fresh breads which are top tier, and a green sauce to die for, aka cilantro chutney, and the red chutney isn't any less craveable as well. I wouldn't give you 5cents for rice or tahdeep butter topped hard rice, though many people think that's their favorite thing, ehh, I am there for tons of veggies and sauce with my grilled lamb, or chicken shawarma. The bolani stuffed bread is a bit like India's onion or garlic kulcha, and it's pretty comfy with potatoes in there too, again, because of the sauces to dip it in.

I deployed to afghanistan in 2010 to helmand as a 0311. Lived in a tiny village and ate their food alot. They eat the following:

Breakfast:
Foot bread (think drier naan) good when fresh hard af when old
Chai (black tea, usually indian with fuckloads of sugar)
Yogurt / sour cream stuff to top the bread with.

No lunch, too hot
Chai all day tho

Dinner:
Goat simmered in a gallon of oil literally ( sometimes chicken, cooked same way)
Long grain rice cooked in gallon of oil ( I'm not kidding about the oil half their meals seemed like oil, was good tho)
Tomatoes or watermelons in oil and vinegar with salt and pepper
Some really chalky milk white drink served with ice if they can get ice ( depends if the Taliban allowed it that week)
Chai to drink
