I had a White Lady and it was delicious.
I make a lot of sours with fresh lemons and superfine sugar.
One cocktail I did not like was a French Connection. Perhaps I am not refined enough to appreciate Cognac.

New York Sour. Whiskey, lemon juice, simple syrup, and a float of red wine.

I enjoy it because there are a ton of combinations you can do with whiskeys alone, and then the variations in wine add extra depth, but it's still very easy to make. Currently using rye whiskeys and port wine but it's sweet enough for summer and robust enough for cold weather as well.

Bros, need help trying to get the ratios right for this drink I had one time, it was called either a Manhattan riff or a "Manhattan with a riff", was basically a normal Manhattan but it involved using 100% maple syrup. I've been trying to make it but just can't seem to get the ratios right where it's not overbearingly sweet and not too strong on the whisky. So far this is what I have, and it kinda works but I feel it's still a bit "heavy", like it needs something to cut the richness. I hardly ever mix drinks but was gonna meet with some friends and everyone was going to make a drink for the group. Any thoughts?

You overshot. The Manhattan runs 2:1:2. 2 oz whiskey (preferably an American whiskey, especially rye, but bourbon works in a pinch), 1 oz sweet vermouth, 2 dashes of bitters. It was a riff on a Manhattan (ie, the guy had no name for it but it's based on a Manhattan), hence you thinking it's a Manhattan riff or so. Feel free to name it whatever you want. If you really want to get it right, add a barspoon/quarter ounce maple syrup. Even the quarter ounce might be too much, I'd wager the best one is the barspoon.

People can flail at you for their laziness but i enjoy Rob Roy’s as well. Really bitter and savory cocktail that keeps out sqeemish plebs. I’ve also enjoyed sazerac’s for a while despite abhorring most liquorice liqueurs. I think it’s less about your tastebuds “changing” as you grow up and more about getting bored and wanting anything opposite of what you’ve always had

I'm learning but I've had a lot of fun with Black Russian variants. I bought a minibar and some drinks and the cocktails I can comfortably make are:

Old Fashioned
Spicy Jalapeno Martini
Black Russian
White Russian (with and without irish cream added)
Mudslide
Absinthe Frappe (basically just absinthe on ice)

It's a short list but I've only been at this for about a month. I love good absinthe.

Recently I've really enjoyed a drink I created called the Odium:

45 ml Gin
22 ml Yellow Chartreuse
22 ml Chile Ancho Liqueur
15 ml Goldschlager
15 ml peperoncino syrup
Stirred, and optionally garnished with two peperoncini

The syrup is one I made myself; you just make simple syrup (1 cup each of water and sugar) and then boil 5 crushed peperoncini, 2 sticks of cinnamon, and 3 cloves of garlic in the syrup. The drink is a great mix of spicy, sweet, and cinnamon flavors.

Pink gin: it's bitter and crisp. For me, one is a comfortable amount to drink easy to make and explain to a bartender.

Harvey wallbanger: refreshing and stimulating. Quenches thirst. Works fine with food. Most bars have ingredients.

I agree most Old Fashioned cocktails are beyond lazily made, the bartender just slaps a spoon of syrup and a dash of bitters into a double of bourbon and calls it a day. I figured it wouldn't be a huge bitch to make considering how simple of a cocktail it is.
My personal recipe is:
>2oz bourbon
>dash of bitters
>citrus rind of your choosing
>dash of maple syrup
>dash of the juice from the maraschino jar
>dash of simple syrup
>shake ingredients in a shaker (minus the rind)
>pour over large whiskey ice cube in an old fashioned glass, top with cherry.
I find the three different forms of sweetener added in little doses create a very rich sweet undertone far better than a bit more of just any single sweetener.

I can get the argument for it being "something of a Tiki drink" on the basis of it being an aromatized wine, a liqueur, and a spirit plus lime juice, which is a bit all over the place if you don't know how it works - Kina Lillet interacts with the gin much like how a G&T does, the curacao and the lemon play up the citrus notes in a dry gin, what you end up with is something not too dissimilar from somewhere between a Gin and Tonic and a Sidecar, though I'd argue more bitter than the Gin and Tonic because of the relative lack of dilution due to no carbonated water.

But on the other hand, it's such a classic drink that's written in such a "classic" fashion even when compared to the legendary Tiki drinks like the Zombie or the Fog Cutter who rely so much on things like the very deliberate choice of fruit juices, syrups, spices, spirits and they have 10 ingredients or something ridiculous like that, the Corpse Reviver #2 is so minimal in its choice it's almost impressive.

Good maraschino cherries will have a hit of Maraschino liqueur in them, which might be what homie's tasting... maybe. In smaller ratios, I can taste a bit of semi-sweet cherry as a background note, but up in the 1/6-1/4 area, I just taste this hard rum funk, and it's not just present in Luxardo. If you - for some reason - don't taste that funk in maraschino liqueur, see if you can get your hands on some cherry rakija (visnjevaca?). It's usually got the funk.
