I work at a relatively large construction contracting agency out of HK. Spent a year in and out of nigeria and kenya planning rail systems for this agency. We ate a lot better than the chinese workers who got shipped in the lay the tracks, but it was still pretty ass. Local meat had me shitting BAD the first few weeks in country. We had shitty wine from mainland china. Didn't even get tsingtao or shaoxing wine. We had shitty oliet wine en masse however

I'm not a big fan of champagne either but dated a girl once who loved it so I got to taste a bunch. In my experience it's one of two alcohols where price and quality directly correlate: a $20 bottle of champagne/tequila will always be better than a $10 bottle. Not true for other wines (I've had lots of $10 bottles that were better than $20 bottles). I don't drink hard alcohol any more and never did have a taste for scotch or whiskey so can't comment on those.
