Carrot cake is one of the easiest cakes to make from scratch but they’re old so they probably don’t feel like fucking around with it. Some things get draining as you get older and you probably don’t have a lot of experience baking so they feel like they’re responsible for the bulk of the cooking and they’d most likely prefer sitting and talking to you. Premixed is convenient and makes an edible cake
