I am an alcoholic and I just mix it with sugary drinks. Not because of the taste but because it allows me to consume more in a shorter time period. In the end we’re drinking for the effect, but if you want to enjoy the subtle taste of different wood shavings or charcoal I guess that’s up to you.

Most people really are faking. Not that it cant be enjoyable, but we're succeptible to priming. You can tell someone that a whisky tastes like butterscotch and tell another person that same whisky has a cinnamon taste and they'll both miraculously "spot" the note/flavor. Most people just taste the harshness of the booze, the wood, and subtle sweetness if applicable (like bourbons).

Usually I will try it straight then after a few sips I'll add a couple drops of water at most to see how it changes. It's generally agreed upon alcohol tastes best or has the most flavor at 35-40% abv. There are some very good bourbons that are 65% abv, but are as smooth as an inferior 40%.

We are drinking booze here, so it really is a preference, but it is worth trying considering how it's such a widely agreed upon thing...
At higher proofs the alcohol flavor can block out some of the subtler nuances.

I really like booze. I used to drink a lot of cheap shit just to get drunk and graduated to decent beer and then wine and craft beer and then I started getting really into spirits. The common factor in all fans of alcohol is they like to get fucking drunk. The flavour matters, I'd rather drink something I like and I will come up with all sorts of ritualistic behaviour to slow down and justify my drinking, but ultimately I want to feel the impact of alcohol. Others might not see it like that, but they more than likely still drink too much. The vast majority of people barely drink. Like they toast at weddings and maybe get a bottle of wine for an anniversary dinner. Of those that do frequently drink most drink far too much. It is a distribution where like, the top 5% of drinkers drink 50+ drinks a week, it escalates really damn quickly from barely, to infrequently, to too much, to a dangerous amount, to how the fuck are you still alive?

Anyway. I prefer lighter spirits because whisky can be ridiculously complex and difficult to drink. You don't want to mix it with anything because it spoils all the different flavours, but holy shit is it hard going. Can't drink enough of it fast enough to get buzzed. Last single malt I drank was bottled 58%. It is challenging.

DESU I prefer any light spirt shaken as a simple sour. Lime, simple syrup, maybe a dash of bitters, triple sec, or elderflower cordial if I'm feeling frisky. Sometimes a reposado tequila.

Try out a cheap bottle of rye whiskey to see if you like it, either Bulleit again or even Wild Turkey makes a decent one for cheap. If you like either of those give High West Double Rye a shot.

Elijah Craig and Four Roses Single Barrel are some of my favorite bourbons, a bit pricier than Bulleit but definitely worth it. Four Roses does have cheaper bottles but I would avoid anything that isn't Single Barrel.
