Looks like ditalini to me, and no it's not good for salads, just soup.

My favorite Barilla is probably their Cellentani because it's ridged, hollow and spiraled, all 3 in in 1, and holds onto Mac n cheese sauce so nicely. For a cold pasta salad, it also has other ingredients finding their way inside the spiral, so forkability to grab lots of carrot, green onion, feta or whatever your salad contains.
I also enjoy the bucatini, casarece, and pipette shapes quite often.

wife got a "gag gift" for her birthday at work, a box of these. was hungry one night and we had no other pasta, so she cooked this. bros, the way this pasta holds sauce is amazing. the spaces are just the right size. there are no thick corners that result in uneven cooking. it's just perfect. it even has a great mouthfeel because it has these round protrusions that interact so nicely with your tongue. I have unironically bought a few more boxes online since then even though it's expensive and we cook it once in a while. we say that they're space shuttles when we feed it to our kid

How is this pasta made? I know most are made by extrusion, but this is not possible here.

Why wouldn't it be possible with extrusion? All of the pieces are connected.

Are you asking or telling with an upward inflection? I think the pasta is being extruded from a machine and then cut with a spinning blade. I would describe this as extrusion, yes.

in the US they're mostly marketed to kids with funny names like Wagon Wheels instead of the 'proper' name rotelle. rotelle with parmesan and butter is a childhood comfort food for me as a result
but as an adult the way it feels as you chew hasn't stopped being satisfying, and it holds sauce well.
