You should be able to eat a loaf of bread before it goes properly stale, you can toast it to freshen it up and if you had eggs you could make French Toast. I can't imagine the people who buy loaves of bread and then don't eat any of it though. That said tossing bread in the fridge actually makes it go stale faster, if you have more bread than you can eat (i.e. you bought multiple loaves) it goes in the freezer.
