From 18 to 38 I drank 3 or 4 cokes a day.
What was the result? I had to have 2 teeth pulled and cavities in 5 other teeth. I also became pre-diabetic even though I was a healthy weight.

I also smoked a pack of cigarettes a day for a decade, and I can honestly say that drinking that much soda was worse for my health than smoking.

Bad habits that you can get away with in your 20s will catch up to you in your mid 30s.

Sugar is an addiction, the only way to stop it is cut it off from the source. Your first step to addiction, and a lifestyle change, is finding something that replaces it, which you enjoy. Consider getting n a brita pitcher and leave it in the fridge so you know you have cold and clean water. Also buy a steel water bottle like a takeya, something that makes it easy to refill and stay hydrated, so there's no excuse. It seems trivial but when I was addicted to soda I would justify having to pour a glass of water with ice as an excuse to go the store and buy a couple 2 liters of dr pepper. Even though we know it's more effort to drive to the store than poor a glass of icewater or fill up a water bottle with ice and water, your addiction warps your perception to the point of absurdity. Once you are at least a month gone without sugary drinks, try fasting to cut sugar out for good. Buy bananas/oranges if you get a sugar craving, it will be much better for you than scoffing or chugging high fructose corn syrup poison.

Hey, I'm giving up soda too, fren! I'll share some tips.
Give it up gradually. Firstly switch to something with less intense taste, like pepsi lite or diet coke. Then switch to sweet water, like bon aqua viva. After that you just switch to regular water (you can try carbonated, mineral or electrolyte water when regular water is too boring).
Right now I'm at sweet water stage, no urges to go back.
Also if you tie your abstinence to some specific date, it would be easier to quit. You know, just like it's easier to stop porn addiction during NNN. For example, I decided to drop my soda and chips addiction during Great Lent (in my country it's from March 15). I'm not really religious, but it's useful to have events like this.

I'd argue that chemical sugar is even worse. Although fructose corn syrup does put strain on your liver and and inflame your body, the effects are well documented and it takes a decade just like with alcoholism for fatty liver. Artificial sweeteners may have damaging effects that you can't reverse.

To understand why high fructose corn syrup is bad, you have to understand what it does to your body, and how it's relevant with inflammation and heart disease. Highly refined and concentrated sugars inflame your arteries. Cholesterol tries to repair the damaged tissues in your arteries but fails and just clogs it up, since it's inflamed and the cholesterol usually trans fats which is in fast food can't fit inside these cracks in your arteries to repair, so it builds as plaque. Compare japan to america and there's one thing you'll notice, they don't drink much processed sugar, they drink a shit ton of green tea and water and if they do eat packaged foods it usually doesn't have much sugar in it, Under 2-5g.
