the problem is that they've had to cut their workforce in half off the back of covid. biden promised that the elf cottage industry would be getting assistance in the form of subsidies, but here we are almost in fucking APRIL and they're still operating these factories on a skeleton crew. they've been getting gnomes from mexico in seasonally for the past 20+ years, but gnomes are "non essential workers" so they're getting caught at the border and sent back, even if they have a work visa.
so machinery which is supposed to be shut down for service every six months has been running non-stop since last august, and is it any fucking surprise that you're getting batches fully fudged?
you know, 5 years ago, it would be no problem. they'd toss the batch, whatever. but today the factories are on fucking razor thin margins and they can't afford the quality control they used to. in a pack you'll see maybe even half the cookies are cracked, some crumbled, uneven coats of fudge. the higher-ups at keebler are sitting on a god damn ticking time bomb. it won't be long until you start hearing about deaths from these factories. it's going to be a PR nightmare.
